Oceanic Time Warner Cable announced this morning that it has started to deploy Wi-Fi hotspots in Hawaii. Starting today, Time Warner Cable subscribers with Standard Internet or above data tiers that live in Oahu can access more than 400 hotspots across the island.

The court-appointed receiver responsible for Alvarion is recommending a sale of the company for about $5.8 million in total, to Valley Telecom, which provides telecommunications services to an international clientele. The deal would be contingent upon approval of a plan to compensate Alvarion’s creditors.
Cox Communications’ subscribers can now tap into other MSOs’ Wi-Fi hotspots in some of the major cities across the nation, including Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco and Philadelphia. To start with, Cox customers can look for the CableWiFi SSID when they are in Comcast, Cablevision and Bright House Networks systems. Time Warner Cable hotspots will be added into the mix in the fourth quarter of this year.
roadcom today announced an expansion to its wearable devices platform that will include Wi-Fi direct technology. According to the company, integrating Wi-Fi Direct into its Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) platform, Broadcom is helping OEMs develop wearable products that communicate seamlessly to the cloud via smart mobile devices.
Amazon could be going full-service soon, using spectrum controlled by satellite communications company Globalstar. The move would bridge the gap between Amazon’s hardware and web services. Much like Google’s own advances in connectivity, if Amazon’s network ambitions came to fruition, it would mean greater control for the company.
AT&T has signed a multi-year agreement with Delta Air Lines to enable better in-flight mobile point-of-sale transactions by flight attendants. AT&T will equip Delta’s 19,000 flight attendants with Nokia Lumia 820 devices powered by Microsoft Dynamics mobile point-of-sale platform on Windows Phone 8.
Cox Business has won a seven-year contract to provide voice, video and data services to the Las Vegas Convention Center and Cashman Center. The deal covers 3.3 million square feet of meeting and exhibit space across Las Vegas. Cox will start providing its services to some of the conventions and special events this fall.
AT&T blasted a T-Mobile proposal for the FCC’s upcoming incentive auctions for 600 MHz spectrum, desirable for wireless broadband. The carrier is saying T-Mobile’s plan would result in failure to generate sufficient revenue and “almost certainly doom the auction.” T-Mobile proposes caps or limits on how much of the 600 MHz spectrum AT&T and Verizon would be able to bid on.
Azuki Systems said it has integrated its Azuki Media Platform with the new Android Stick IP set-top box from LG Electronics. The combination is designed to enable service providers to deliver a broadband HDTV service experience on any TV in the home, without requiring a traditional set-top box and the cost and inconvenience of a truck roll.
According to a recent study by Allion USA, Comcast’s public hotspots were faster than AT&T and Boingo Wireless’ hotspots by a significant margin. The study across four cities found that Comcast’s Xfinity WiFi hotspots had faster download speeds an up to three times faster upload speeds.
Time Warner Cable’s Q2 earnings rose 6 percent, helped by higher revenue from business services and residential broadband. The company had a net loss of both basic video and phone customers, a result of the company has been deliberately targeting customers who provide “higher ARPU, higher profit and lower churn, even if that means fewer connects.”
Starbucks says it's reached a deal to partner with Google that will allow it to offer its customers dramatically faster Wi-Fi service. . Starting in August, new U.S. company-operated Starbucks stores will begin to receive up to 10 times faster network and Wi-Fi speeds.
Sprint on Tuesday unveiled second quarter earnings that showed record revenues of $8.8 billion, but the company couldn't stop the bleeding that has resulted from the shuttering of its Nextel iDEN network. While Sprint said it has managed to migrate 4 million iDEN subscribers over to the Sprint platform, the June 30th closing of the push-to-talk network contributed heavily to a $1.6 billion loss.
Charter Communications said it is now making available a Wi-Fi router from NetGear designed to support recent usage patterns that include more people in a household connecting more devices simultaneously. Charter WiFi is available to new and current customers who subscribe to either the company’s 30Mbps or 100 Mbps tiers.

Verizon reported that for its second quarter, it netted gains of 161,000 FiOS Internet and 140,000 FiOS video subscribers. Those video adds push Verizon’s video subscriber total up above 5 million. Net income at Verizon Communications was $2.25 billion, or 78 cents per share, up 23 percent from a year ago.
