BlackBerry has cancelled Friday's conference call with analysts to discuss its latest earnings report. The troubled smartphone company said Wednesday evening that in light of Fairfax's letter of intent to buy BlackBerry, the call has been cancelled.

Charter subs in Calif. dial up unlimited long distance calls to Mexico

As part of a new promotion, Charter Communications’ voice customers in California can place unlimited calls to landlines in Mexico. The promotion also includes up to 250 minutes of calling to cell phones in Mexico with the Charter Phone Unlimited plan in California and a subscription to the Triple Play PaqueTV Plus package.

Comcast Business adds mobility to Business VoiceEdge

Comcast Business has added a mobile app for Android and iOS devices to its Business VoiceEdge service. The free mobile app extends unified communications and video calling features into VoiceEdge, which is a cloud-based PBX offering for small and medium-sized business.

MRV Communications bulks up Pasadena’s communications network

The city of Pasadena picked MRV Communications’ optical transport offering for its new communications network. Pasadena is using MRV’s FiberDriver to provide high-capacity optical services for its municipal network. The city’s new network will be used to link its facilities using future-proof, high bandwidth services over a fully-owned fiber infrastructure.

Bright House Networks serves up hosted voice to syrup company

Bright House Networks Business Solutions has cut a deal to provide Monin Gourmet Flavorings, which makes premium syrups and flavoring products, with its hosted voice service. The voice service is being used by three of Monin’s corporate offices in Clearwater and Largo, Fla., and Grapevine, Texas. 

Report: Cisco extends lead in enterprise SBC sector

Founder of Dolby Laboratories dies

Ray Dolby, an American inventor and audio pioneer who founded Dolby Laboratories, has died at the age of 80. The company said Thursday that Dolby died in his home at San Francisco. He had been living with Alzheimer's disease for several years and was diagnosed with acute leukemia this summer.

RDK Management names president/GM, lays support foundation

Comcast has passed out promotions to Lynn Charytan, Jennifer Khoury and Marcien Jenckes, and hired newcomer Ed Brassel to a newly created job. After previously serving as senior vice president and general manager of video services for Comcast Cable, Jenckes has been promoted to executive vice president, consumer services.

TWC promotes FitzPatrick to SVP, CFO of residential services

Time Warner Cable recently announced that Mark FitzPatrick had been promoted to senior vice president and chief financial officer of residential services. FitzPatrick, who now reports to executive vice president and chief financial officer Artie Minson, now oversees all areas of finance for the company’s residential, media and video operations.

Cox snaps up Tulsa-based CLEC

Cox Communications has entered into a definitive agreement to buy EasyTEL, which is a Tulsa, Okla.-based competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC.) The deal will give Cox Business better access to a metropolitan fiber network in order to provide voice, video and data services to area businesses.

Vodafone in talks to sell Verizon Wireless stake

Britain's Vodafone PLC, one of the world's largest cellphone companies, confirmed Thursday that it was talking to Verizon Communications about selling its U.S. operations. Bright House Networks turns up voice, data services for school district

Bright House Networks recently announced it was provisioning voice and data services for the nation’s eighth-largest school district. Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS), which is headquartered in Tamp Bay, Fla., started migrating its voice and data transport services to Bright House Networks in April before completing the process on July 1.

Suddenlink inks outside sales channel deal with Telarus

Cox Business reaches for cloud with ViaWest

Cox Business scores deal with Las Vegas Convention Center

Cox Business has won a seven-year contract to provide voice, video and data services to the Las Vegas Convention Center and Cashman Center. The deal covers 3.3 million square feet of meeting and exhibit space across Las Vegas. Cox will start providing its services to some of the conventions and special events this fall. 

Study: Tight race between Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson

Telecommunications vendors Cisco, Huawei and Ericsson were neck and neck on Infonetics Research’s equipment vendor leadership scorecard. While each vendor had different strengths, Huawei was ranked first on the scorecard, followed closely by Ericsson and Cisco.

Comcast tabs Martinez as SVP in Houston

Comcast, TWC team up to form RDK Management

Comcast and Time Warner Cable have formed RDK Management, LLC, which will take the reins on licensing, training, community support and code management for the Comcast Reference Design Kit. Comcast will contribute RDK components into the new entity, including the RDK code and specifications, related intellectual property rights and associated contracts.

Cisco 4Q profit grows but plans to cut 4,000 jobs

Cisco's revenue guidance for the current quarter was weaker than Wall Street expected, and shares fell sharply in extended trading. The company's stock fell $2.51, or 9.5 percent, to $23.87 in extended trading after the results were released.
