Time Warner Cable gears up for launch of cloud-based UI on IP boxes

On a fourth-quarter and year-end earnings conference call, Time Warner Cable President and COO Rob Marcus outlined some of the cable operator’s key initiatives for this year, which included the rollout of a cloud-based user interface on IP set-top boxes and gateways.

Broadcom snags BroadLogic

Broadcom has purchased BroadLogic, Broadcom confirmed. The acquisition was made months ago, during the summer of 2012, but was not announced. The only previous public mention of the action was a status update attesting to the fact on the website of one of BroadLogic’s investors.

U-verse remains a growth driver in Q4

AT&T reported a net gain of 192,000 U-verse TV subscribers for a total of 4.5 million TV customers, and a net gain of 609,000 high-speed Internet subscribers, to reach a total of 7.7 million. The company said its combined total of TV and broadband U-verse subscribers was 8 million.

Cable One ups TV Everywhere with Synacor, bows guarantee program

Cable One has added more TV Everywhere content via an expanded agreement with Synacor, and it also announced a new 30-day money-back satisfaction guarantee program. Cable One signed on early last year with Synacor for its first crack at TV Everywhere services and a new customer Web portal.

Metaswitch gives voice to Global Xpress

Inmarsat will use VoIP equipment from Metaswitch to provide the telephony element of its Global Xpress worldwide communication service. Metaswitch is supplying Inmarsat with its Universal Media Gateways, MetaSphere server, MetaView system and Perimeta session border controllers.

Hargray buying managed services company

Demonstrating that you’re never too small to target the enterprise market, Hargray Communications said it intends to purchase iTech, a managed services company. Hargray has operations in South Carolina and in Georgia, and iTech is headquartered in Savannah, Ga.

Verizon posts record Q4 loss on pension adjustment

Verizon strengthened its position as the top dog of the wireless industry in its latest quarter by raking in new subscribers and selling millions of iPhones, but it also posted a record loss. The loss of $4.23 billion, or $1.48 per share, for the fourth quarter was mainly due to adjustments to the value of its pension funds and obligations.

Telecoms to lawmakers: Lift cold-call restrictions

Idaho landline phone companies contend a 13-year-old law forbidding them from cold-calling existing customers is crippling their ability to market high-speed Internet. Verizon to add 500 new jobs at Tulsa facility

Verizon Communications says it will create a financial services hub at its facility in Tulsa, Okla., adding 500 new jobs. Verizon already employs more than 900 people at its Tulsa facility. The company says the new jobs will be finance and accounting positions.

Cablevision launches Spanish Web portal

In order to better connect its Hispanic customer base with its services, Cablevision announced that it has launched a new Web portal, Optimum.net en Español. The new Web portal knits together Cablevision’s Optimum services with full Spanish-language features.

Suddenlink promotes Stephens to division president

Suddenlink has promoted Kevin Stephens to president of the company’s Commercial & Advertising Operations (CAO) organization, headquartered in Dallas. Two other Suddenlink executives were promoted to vice president: Brian May and Bradley Cooke.

Comcast pumps $150M into Arris

In a stock deal with one of its main suppliers, Comcast has agreed to pay $150 million for a stake in Arris. Comcast will acquire 10.6 million shares in Arris, and the deal will be completed in concert with Arris’ $2.35 billion purchase of Google’s Motorola Home division.

Wave Broadband buys fiber partner

Expanding its Northwest footprint, Wave Broadband has acquired a fiber network operator that specializes in high-capacity links to public and business customers. Wave Broadband’s parent, WaveDivision Holdings, paid $50 million for Black Rock Cable, which provides fiber connectivity in northwest Washington State.

Former Rogers exec O’Carroll joins Sandvine’s board

Former Rogers Communications executive Dermot O’Carroll, who retired from Rogers last year, has joined Sandvine’s board of directors. O’Carroll had almost 40 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, including 15 years at Rogers, before he retired.
