Propelled by victories in two events, Bright House Networks’ Greg Babinski took home the top honors at the SCTE International Cable-Tec Games in Denver earlier this week. Babinski, representing SCTE Region 9 and the SCTE Central Florida Chapter, beat out 29 other competitors in the 24th annual Cable-Tec Games.
When Netflix dropped into Liberty Global’s European footprint, Liberty CEO and president Mike Fries said it prodded his company to innovate and grow. When it comes to cloud environments, cable operators would do well to go with a hybrid model for a variety of reasons, according to a keynote panel Tuesday morning at Expo. Comcast executive vice president and chief technology officer Tony Werner moderated the panel “Cable’s cloud forecast: More apps and infrastructure,” which included a discussion on the role that dev ops and agile developments played in the cloud setting.
GCI, which is the largest triple play provider in Alaska, has inked an LTE roaming agreement with T-Mobile that provides its wireless customers access to an LTE network from Fairbanks, Alaska to Miami, Florida. While roaming agreements across the country are nothing new, GCI said the deal with T-Mobile was the nation’s first LTE roaming partnership. Financial terms of the deal weren’t released.
Cox Communications announced that it has named John Wolfe as senior vice president and Southwest region manager, which is Cox’s largest region in the nation and includes Las Vegas, Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas. Wolfe, who has logged nearly 30 years in the cable industry, came over to the Southwest from Cox's Northeast region, where he served as the senior vice president and region manager.
Faced with dwindling attendance over the past few years and the continued evolution of Internet technologies, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) has pulled the plug on The Cable Show in favor of rebranding it as INTX. INTX, which stands for the Internet and Television Expo, will still be held on The Cable Show’s original schedule of May 5-7 next year in Chicago, but with more of an Internet focus.
Liberty Global-owned Virgin Media, which is the largest cable operator in the UK, will fire up a small 1-Gigabit trial in the Cambridgeshire village of Papworth that will feature a new trenching technique for laying fiber. Virgin Media said it would lay fiber in Papworth by using “narrow-trenching,” which it claims could reduce the cost of the network roll out by 33 percent.
The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and CableLabs announced today that they would collaborate more closely on improving energy management issues for the cable industry, including strategies and innovations designed to reduce energy consumption and costs in facilities, plants, and fleet, as well as in the home.
The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers has broadened its reach abroad with the recent addition of Liberty Global to SCTE’s Corporate Alliance Program (CAP) as well as the formation of an international-based training program. The training and certfication program is called the International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE), which will serve as an international gateway to the SCTE’s library of resources.
TVCable Ecuador picked CMTS and CCAP vendor Casa Systems to provision its platform for a six-city expansion project. TVCable had previously teamed up with Casa on a first phase expansion across eight cities within its footprint. Miami-based Cable Network Associates helped Casa land the deal with TVCable.
Charter Communications and Comcast announced they were ditching the name SpinCo for the emerging cable company that will be spun off once the Comcast/Time Warner Cable merger and Charter/Comcast transactions are completed. The new name is GreatLand Connections Inc.,which drew upon the company’s Midwest and Southeast footprint that was formely operated by Comcast.
Charter Communications announced it has signed a deal with management and technology consulting firm Sense Corp to create its next-generation enterprise data warehouse. Under the terms of the deal, St. Louis-based Sense Corp will serve as Charter’s exclusive vendor for its business intelligence initiative, which Charter said would include integrating new subscribers by early next year.
On Friday AT&T filed a patent lawsuit against Cox Communications alleging that the cable operator and over 30 of its regional systems had infringed on eight of its patents. The patents were related to DVRs and set-top boxes as well as managing VoIP and data services.
Spain's telecommunications company Telefonica has raised its offer to buy Brazilian operator Global Village Telecom, or GVT, from French media conglomerate Vivendi to 7.45 billion euros ($9.82 billion) from 6.7 billion euros previously. Telefonica S.A. said in a statement Thursday the offer includes 4.66 billion in cash and 12 percent of the share capital in the new company.

Following a recent conversion to all digital, Charter Communications has launched its Charter Spectrum brand in more communities in Southern California. The new digital services included a free speed upgrade from up to 30 Mbps on the downstream to 60 Mbps for most of the MSO’s subscribers in the area.
Cisco said Wednesday that it will lay off up to 6,000 workers, or 8 percent of its workforce, as part of a restructuring. The company, which makes routers, switches and software, said the layoffs will affect workers in operations around the world.
As part of a partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), all of Time Warner Cable’s 18,000 cable technicians across its footprint can now receive AMBER alerts. Along with the new technology that allows them to receive the AMBER alerts, the techs will receive training on how to be on the look out during an alert and to contact law enforcement if they see an abducted child.
Comcast and NBCUniversal have hired 3,000 veterans since January of 2012 as part their ongoing partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative. NBCUniversal and Comcast’s goal was to hire 2,000 veterans through the program by 2015.
Mediacom Communications and CSG International have extended their 15-year partnership with a new multi-year contract extension. With the new deal, Mediacom will broaden the end-to-end customer care and billing solutions provided by CSG to expand beyond triple play services into home automation and other lines of business.
Spearheaded by Comcast’s John Schanz and other industry thought leaders, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) will provide more details on its recently announced Energy 2020 initiative at Cable-Tec Expo next month in Denver. Schanz, chief network officer and executive vice president of Comcast Cable, will speak about the cable industry’s new collaborative energy program that was first announced in June.
MetroCast Communications has fired up a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service in two communities that it serves in Mississippi. The recent FTTH deployments in the Mississippi towns of Starkville and Oxford followed on the heels of a deployment in Carthage, Mississippi earlier this year.
