Netflix's Hastings: People don't love linear TV

Speaking in Canada, the Netflix CEO says his biggest challenge there is competition from the likes of Videotron, Rogers and perhaps the combination of Bell and Astral should that merger happen. Netflix recently published an 11-page letter to shareholders entitled "Netflix Long Term View," outlining how the company believes it will thrive in the years ahead at the expense of conventional broadcast TV.

Total video subs decline for first time

In aggregate, the 13 largest multichannel video program distributors (MVPD) in the U.S. added about 195,000 net additional video subscribers in Q1 2013. But the number of new subscribers in the most recently completed quarter was not enough to offset customer losses in the second and third quarters of 2012.

Dish pushes TVE app into Android devices, social media

Dish Network has updated its TV Everywhere app to include Android devices and more Apple iOS devices and integrated it with Facebook and Twitter. After previously working with just iPads, the satellite video company’s Dish Anywhere app is now live on Android devices (version 4.0 or higher) and all Apple iOS devices that use operating systems that are versions 5.0 or higher.

Spirent takes Casa’s CCAP on a test run

Casa Systems tapped Spirent Communication’s test platform to put its next generation cable modem termination system (CMTS) and integrated converged cable access platform (CCAP) products through their paces. The Spirent TestCenter was used to validate routing performance, asymmetric throughput, latency and packet loss of Casa Systems’ C10G and C3200 platforms.

Arris announced a reorganization following its purchase of Motorola Home from Google. The company will establish two major divisions, a Network & Cloud unit and a CPE (customer premise equipment) unit. Arris execs asserted that even though Motorola Home has been struggling, it is set to bounce back.

Service provider segment powers Cisco's Q2

Cisco reported that second quarter revenue in its Service Provider Video segment grew 30 percent year over year, in its Wireless segment by 27 percent, and in its Data Center segment 77 percent; the average for the company as a whole was 5 percent.

Actiontec to build screencast boxes supporting Intel WiDi

Actiontec Electronics said it will be the lead developer of a new line of products incorporating Intel wireless WiDi designed to link laptops to TVs. WiDi is already built into Intel’s current Core processors, and the company said it has integrated the technology in its forthcoming fourth-generation Core processors as well.

Cranky broadcasters could get their licenses yanked

TV broadcasters who pull their signals off the air might risk forfeiting their spectrum licenses, Sen. Mark Warner this week warned. Fox CEO Chase Carey last month vowed to pull Fox off the air and distribute exclusively through pay TV services if Aereo were allowed to proceed with its current business model.

ABC app to require authentication

In another small victory for MVPDs, ABC said it will make its content available through its newly renamed app only to authenticated pay TV customers, effective July 1. ABC said it has deals in place with Comcast, Cablevision, Cox, Charter, Midcontinent and AT&T.

Comcast shores up services in Superstorm Sandy area

In order to better serve its subscribers, Comcast is putting its collective resources into the New Jersey Shore area that was hit by Superstorm Sandy last year. Along the Jersey Shore communities, Comcast has upgraded 144 miles of its infrastructure and plans on offering new services in the area over the coming months.

Denmark’s Stofa re-ups with SeaChange

SeaChange International announced that Stofa, the second-largest cable operator in Denmark, has signed a multi-year service and maintenance contract for its Adrenalin VOD services. The new deal built upon the existing relationship between the vendor and cable operator that dated back to 2007.
