The FCC recently released its 14th “Annual Assessment of the Status of Competition in the Market for the Delivery of Video Programming.” The most interesting part to me was the back story, and the nearly five-year interval between the 13th report and the 14th.

The development of content delivery networks (CDNs) made it almost inevitable that IP content delivery would become a service, which in turn made it a near certainty that a business services company like IBM would enter the market. IBM has introduced a cloud platform for delivering content on behalf of CE firms.

The Pac-12 Networks opened it football coverage with the Utah-Northern Colorado game, with DirecTV subscribers unable to watch because of a distribution stalemate. France’s Bouygues Telecom is installing Pace’s Helium Unified Gateway Software to enable faster rollouts of new services and apps across a range of gateway devices. Bouygues Telecom will sell Pace’s new Helium software across all of its new BBOX Sensation gateways, as well as legacy devices, in 1.3 million subscriber homes.

AT&T’s Facebook on TV interactive app lets U-verse subscribers view their news feeds, friends list and photos on their TV screens while they’re watching shows. They can also post updates while viewing and share information about the shows they’re watching with their Facebook friends.
Midcontinent is serving its authenticated customers live streaming sports content from WatchESPN across various devices, and it plans on offering more Disney-related video content. Using the free WatchESPN app, Midcontinent subscribers can view live streaming from ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU on their Apple iOS and Android devices.
TiVo is preparing to hit the market with its retail transcoder/router that enables TiVo Premiere DVR users to distribute up to four simultaneous streams to Apple iOS devices. The TiVo Stream, announced earlier this year, will sell for $130 and will be available from TiVo on Sept. 6 and at Best Buy shortly thereafter.

The final judgment includes some minor quibbles with lower court decisions, essentially upholding ActiveVideo’s position – and the $260M in damages Verizon owes the vendor for patent infringement. ActiveVideo charged that Verizon’s FiOS VOD service infringed on four of its patents.
AJK is the first cable operator in India to use a single headend to serve the full range of display devices – TV set-top boxes, connected TVs, PCs, tablets and mobile phones – according to Envivio. AJK’s service, called Reena TV, is targeting more than 200,000 customers for their digital service.

Time Warner Cable announced this morning that it has added live streaming from Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network to its TV Everywhere lineup. The video content is available to Time Warner Cable customers that subscribe to the two channels.
The new beIN Sport network has reached an agreement with Comcast to be carried on its Xfinity TV. Owned by the Al-Jazeera Sport Media Network, beIN Sport will be carried in English on the Xfinity TV Sports Entertainment Package and in Spanish on the Xfinity TV MultiLatino Package.
