Starting today and running through Dec. 31, Atlantic Broadband is offering new customers three free months of Netflix’s streaming service when they sign up for bundles over the holiday season. Customers that sign up for Atlantic’s double play (which includes TV and data) and triple play (TV, data and phone) qualify for the Netflix service, which is integrated with Atlantic’s TiVo offering.

Comcast continues to polish its customer service apple by allowing subscribers to drop off their equipment directly at UPS stores where the gear will be processed, packed and shipped back to Comcast free of charge. In addition to the more than 500 Xfinity stores, the equipment can now be dropped off at 4,400 UPS stores across the nation. The equipment can be handed into the UPS stores as is, without wrapping or packaging.
Sony's losses ballooned to 136 billion yen ($1.2 billion) last quarter as the Japanese electronics and entertainment company's troubled mobile phone division reported huge red ink. The Tokyo-based maker of the PlayStation 4 video game machines, Spider-Man movies and Xperia smartphones had reported a 19.6 billion yen loss for the same July-September period a year earlier.
Arris reported Q3 revenue of $1.4 billion, up 32 percent from the third quarter a year ago. While Time Warner Cable waits in the wings to be acquired by Comcast, the nation’s second-largest cable saw its third-quarter net income drop 6 percent. On the subscriber front, Time Warner Cable lost 184,000 residential video customers in the quarter, which was partially offset by the addition of 92,000 data customers and 14,000 voice subscribers.
TiVo has forged an agreement with Walmart’s Vudu service to provision the latter’s streaming content to TiVo devices. The deal allows TiVo’s Roamio and Mini users to rent or buy movies and TVs shows from Vudu’s content partners, as well as access a customized Ultraviolet cloud library.
Madison Square Garden Co. said Wednesday it is launching an on-demand service called MSG Go that will allow cable subscribers to watch Knicks games and MSG Network shows. MSG Go will be available to subscribers of pay-TV networks that carry MSG Networks.

Aided by an increase in broadband subscribers, Charter Communications increased its revenue in the third quarter while also cutting its net losses. Charter added 94,000 data subscribers in the third, which helped offset the loss of 9,000 basic video subscribers. Charter had lost 27,000 video subscribers in the same quarter a year ago
The FCC Chairman proposed that over the top video distributors be given the same rights to retransmit broadcast stations and to distribute linear channels as any telco, cable company, or satellite broadcaster. Wheeler said it's time to modernize our interpretation of "MVPD" so that it is technology-neutral.
FilmOn has notified the FCC it intends to begin retransmitting local broadcast channels to authenticated subscribers. The company said it has established headends to receive, record and stream local broadcast station video programming to consumers in dozens of designated market areas.

CenturyLink announced this morning that former Liberty Global executive Aamir Hussain has joined the company as its new chief technology officer. Hussain, who reports to CenturyLink CEO and president Glen Post, previously worked in the Netherlands as Liberty Global's managing director and chief technology officer for Europe.
Deluxe has entered an agreement with China Film Co. to provide mastering services for motion pictures released in the China Giant Screen (CGS) format. Deluxe and China Film also said they will develop a 115,000-cubic-foot mastering facility and screening room in Los Angeles.
Frontier Communications wrapped its $2 billion acquisition of AT&T wireline business, statewide fiber network, U-verse operations, and Dish Network customers in Connecticut, marking the occasion with service interruptions in both broadband and TV. The deal was announced at the end of 2013.
Amazon has jumped into the TV stick arena to compete against similar devices from the likes of Google’s Chromecast and Roku. This morning Amazon announced its Fire TV Stick, which is available to existing and new Amazon Prime customers for $19 over the next two days, or $39 as a standalone. Amazon is currently taking preorders for the Fire Stick with shipping slated for Nov. 19.
Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel) is helping support the 2014 Create West Virginia Conference by offering free Wi-Fi in Glenville, W.Va. Shentel’s free Wi-Fi offer started on Oct. 15 and is slated to run through the rest of the month.
Comcast has suffered several customer service related black eyes this year, including the overly zealous customer service rep that refused to cancel a former subscriber’s service and the allegation that the nation’s top cable operator got another disgruntled customer fired for complaining about his customer service. Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts took to the customer service stump during Thursday’s third quarter earnings call.
In order to expand its presence in southeast Georgia, South Carolina-based Hargray Communications announced it has picked up Reidsville, Ga.-based Kennedy Cablevision. In addition to adding Kennedy Cablevision’s residential and commercial customers into the fold, Hargray said the deal would allow it to upgrade its existing network technology and infrastructure as well build out additional infrastructure.
Vendors are rapidly filling the market with enabling technology for G.fast. Broadcom announced variants of several DSL chips that will now support G.fast and G.vector standards, and Adtran said its G.fast technology, introduced last month, is in trials with several customers around the world.
The company recorded 601,000 U-verse high speed Internet subscriber net adds, including 44,000 business customers, pushing its total of broadband customers past 12 million. AT&T also tallied 216,000 U-verse TV subscribers added, for a total of more than 6 million.
Aided by declining video subscriber losses, an increase in data subscribers and continued growth in the business services sector, Comcast posted solid results in its third quarter earnings report this morning. While Comcast lost 81,000 video subscribers in the recent third quarter, it was still the best third quarter for video in the past seven years.
