Cisco to lay off up to 6,000 workers

Cisco said Wednesday that it will lay off up to 6,000 workers, or 8 percent of its workforce, as part of a restructuring. The company, which makes routers, switches and software, said the layoffs will affect workers in operations around the world. 

Time Warner Cable techs pitch in on AMBER alerts

As part of a partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), all of Time Warner Cable’s 18,000 cable technicians across its footprint can now receive AMBER alerts. Along with the new technology that allows them to receive the AMBER alerts, the techs will receive training on how to be on the look out during an alert and to contact law enforcement if they see an abducted child.

Comcast, NBCUniversal hire 3,000 veterans

Comcast and NBCUniversal have hired 3,000 veterans since January of 2012 as part their ongoing partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative. NBCUniversal and Comcast’s goal was to hire 2,000 veterans through the program by 2015.

Conviva signs deal with EchoStar

A CBS survey of 700 people in the U.S. with Internet and television connections last year found that 28 percent said they're watching more television than they did a year ago.  That may not seem like much, but there's a long history of people saying they are watching, or plan to watch, less TV — even as Nielsen measurements proved the opposite is true. In other words, liking television is becoming more socially acceptable.

RCN locks up more Showtime VOD content

AMC Networks 2Q profit falls 57 percent

AMC Networks Inc. on Thursday reported earnings that decreased by 57 percent in its second quarter, but beat analysts' expectations. The New York-based company said net income fell to $58.7 million, or 81 cents per share, from $135.7 million, or $1.87 per share, in the same quarter one year earlier.

Charter lines up SEC Network deal with ESPN

With the clock ticking down on the SEC Network’s launch on Aug. 14, Charter Communications reached an agreement with ESPN to carry the network. With the recent additions of DirecTV, Suddenlink Communications, WOW! and Cable One, pretty much all of the dominos have fallen for SEC Network carriage agreements with the exception of Verizon FiOS.

Comcast has signed on as a client of San Francisco-based Doctor On Demand in order to provide its employees video visits with the healthcare service’s doctors. Comcast plans on integrating Doctor On Demand into its health and wellness offerings and will, for certain plans, fully subsidize employees’ video visits with Doctor On Demand physicians

Fox: No more pursuits of content companies

Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. executives said Wednesday that the company won't try to buy any other big content companies, a day after it called off its pursuit of rival media giant Time Warner Inc. Fox Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey said on a conference call with analysts that "we have no plans to pursue any other third-party content company as an alternative to Time Warner."

CenturyLink plans gigabit services in 16 markets

CenturyLink plans to leapfrog some of its competitors by going straight to symmetrical broadband speeds up to 1 Gbps in 16 markets. The carrier has also been reported to be negotiating with some of the cities, including Portland, Ore., for video franchises.

Cablevision loses customers, but has faith in Wi-Fi

Cablevision lost 28,000 video customers, 8,000 broadband subscribers, as Verizon FiOS enticed subscribers away with offers of the triple play priced as low as $69 a month. But Wi-Fi usage is increasing, and the MSO believes it may yet be turned into a key differentiator against competitors.
