Mediacom Communications, CSG extend contract

Mediacom Communications and CSG International have extended their 15-year partnership with a new multi-year contract extension. With the new deal, Mediacom will broaden the end-to-end customer care and billing solutions provided by CSG to expand beyond triple play services into home automation and other lines of business.

SCTE to provide details on Energy 2020 during Expo session

Spearheaded by Comcast’s John Schanz and other industry thought leaders, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) will provide more details on its recently announced Energy 2020 initiative at Cable-Tec Expo next month in Denver. Schanz, chief network officer and executive vice president of Comcast Cable, will speak about the cable industry’s new collaborative energy program that was first announced in June. 

Senators propose a la carte for broadcast stations

Two Senators have floated an idea for fixing the retransmission consent mess; they are proposing a la carte for broadcast stations. The idea would be that broadcasters who charge too much might find themselves losing viewers and therefore money.

MetroCast lights up fiber in Miss.

MetroCast Communications has fired up a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service in two communities that it serves in Mississippi. The recent FTTH deployments in the Mississippi towns of Starkville and Oxford followed on the heels of a deployment in Carthage, Mississippi earlier this year.

Cultural changes in attitude toward TV

A CBS survey of 700 people in the U.S. with Internet and television connections last year found that 28 percent said they're watching more television than they did a year ago.  That may not seem like much, but there's a long history of people saying they are watching, or plan to watch, less TV — even as Nielsen measurements proved the opposite is true. In other words, liking television is becoming more socially acceptable.

RCN locks up more Showtime VOD content

After announcing a TV Everywhere deal last month, RCN said it had significantly expanded the number of available VOD choices from Showtime. Authenticated RCN subscribers now have access to “10 times” the number of programming from Showtime On Demand.

Univision Communications promotes Cuddihy, Rodriquez to executive team

Univision Communications Inc. announced that it had promoted Kevin Cuddihy and Jessica Rodriguez to its executive team. Cuddihy, a former Comcast Spotlight exec, was named president of local media while Rodriguez was appointed chief marketing officer, effective immediately.

AMC Networks 2Q profit falls 57 percent

AMC Networks Inc. on Thursday reported earnings that decreased by 57 percent in its second quarter, but beat analysts' expectations. The New York-based company said net income fell to $58.7 million, or 81 cents per share, from $135.7 million, or $1.87 per share, in the same quarter one year earlier.

Multiplay OKs Arris' new all-digital box

Multiplay in Brazil is the first pay TV operator to certify Arris' DCX525e and to offer the new all-digital box to its subscribers. The box can handle both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 video. It has a 1 GHz tuner, has integrated MediaCipher conditional access.

Charter lines up SEC Network deal with ESPN

With the clock ticking down on the SEC Network’s launch on Aug. 14, Charter Communications reached an agreement with ESPN to carry the network. With the recent additions of DirecTV, Suddenlink Communications, WOW! and Cable One, pretty much all of the dominos have fallen for SEC Network carriage agreements with the exception of Verizon FiOS.

Comcast checks in with Doctor On Demand

Comcast has signed on as a client of San Francisco-based Doctor On Demand in order to provide its employees video visits with the healthcare service’s doctors. Comcast plans on integrating Doctor On Demand into its health and wellness offerings and will, for certain plans, fully subsidize employees’ video visits with Doctor On Demand physicians

Fox: No more pursuits of content companies

Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. executives said Wednesday that the company won't try to buy any other big content companies, a day after it called off its pursuit of rival media giant Time Warner Inc. Fox Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey said on a conference call with analysts that "we have no plans to pursue any other third-party content company as an alternative to Time Warner."

Vyve fills out Oklahoma footprint with acquisitions

Vyve Broadband said it has acquired certain assets of Reach Broadband and all the assets of Lakeview Cable. The acquisitions fill out Vyve’s footprint in Oklahoma. The former Reach and Lakeview systems have already been merged into Vyve's operations.

CenturyLink plans gigabit services in 16 markets

CenturyLink plans to leapfrog some of its competitors by going straight to symmetrical broadband speeds up to 1 Gbps in 16 markets. The carrier has also been reported to be negotiating with some of the cities, including Portland, Ore., for video franchises.

Cablevision loses customers, but has faith in Wi-Fi

Cablevision lost 28,000 video customers, 8,000 broadband subscribers, as Verizon FiOS enticed subscribers away with offers of the triple play priced as low as $69 a month. But Wi-Fi usage is increasing, and the MSO believes it may yet be turned into a key differentiator against competitors.

Comcast re-ups with CSG

Comcast has signed a new contract with CSG International that provides the cable operator with CSG’s residential billing services through June 30, 2019. While CSG has worked with Comcast for the past 20 years, the new contract provides the framework for Comcast to consolidate all of its residential business onto CSG’s billing platform.

New video products pump up Charter's Q2

The MSO lost almost half as many video subscribers in its second quarter of 2014 as it did in Q2 2013. Charter has about 60 percent of its footprint converted to all-digital, and is introducing its new Charter Spectrum triple play with more HD channels and a new cloud-based interface it is beginning test.

Austin next for TWC Maxx upgrade; 7 cities on tap next year

Time Warner Cable CEO Rob Marcus outlined several of the company’s top priorities during this morning’s second quarter earnings call, which included the announcement that seven cities are slated to receive TWC Maxx network upgrades next year. TWC Maxx, which features 300 Mbps on the downstream, will touch down in Charlotte, Dallas, Hawaii, Kansas City, Raleigh, San Antonio and San Diego.

BHN launches Echo to fill in Wi-Fi deadspots

Bright House Networks is now offering residential subscribers in its Central Florida and Tampa Bay areas a new service that was designed to eliminate Wi-Fi “dead zones” in homes. The service, which is called “Echo,” is able to expand Wi-Fi into areas of a home that previously had trouble receiving the signals.

DirecTV 2Q profit climbs 22 percent

DirecTV on Thursday reported profit that rose by 22 percent in its second quarter, helped by demand for World Cup soccer game coverage, and topped analysts' expectations. The El Segundo, California-based company said earnings increased to $806 million, or $1.59 per share, from $660 million, or $1.18 per share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

Cable vet Simmons joins Cablevision’s board

Cable industry pioneer Steve Simmons was elected to Cablevision’s board of directors effective immediately. Simmons joined the board as an independent director and his election increased Cablevision’s board to 18 members. Simmons, 68, has been chairman and chief executive officer of Simmons Patriot Media & Communications since 2002.
