Verizon will pay TiVo at least $250.4 million to settle a patent lawsuit related to its digital video recording technology, and the two have a licensing deal. The two companies agreed to dismiss all pending litigation. They had been scheduled to go to trial in October.
After an appeals court affirmed that Verizon violated ActiveVideo Networks’ patents, the two companies have negotiated a cross-licensing agreement to seal the result of the lawsuit. ActiveVideo charged that Verizon’s FiOS VOD service infringed on four of its patents.
In a deal that was close to 10 years in the making, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks have scored a deal for carriage of NFL Network and NFL RedZone. TWC and Bright House were the last holdouts among the top six biggest cable operators in the United States to reach a deal with the NFL.

Nintendo announced new entertainment features for the console. Called "Nintendo TVii," the service collects all the ways users have to watch movies, TV shows and sports. This includes pay-TV accounts, along with services such as Hulu and Netflix. The GamePad works as a fancy remote control.
The display on Apple's new flagship phone is the same width as previous iPhones, but it is slightly taller. The iPhone 5 has lost some weight and slimmed down, as well. The new phone measures 8 mm thick and 114 grams, whereas the 4S was 9.6 mm thick and 146 grams.
Cox Business has launched two new broadband tiers, 80 Mbps and 100 Mbps, in its Acadiana (southern Louisiana) network. Comcast should benefit from the move toward usage-based billing for broadband. Charging by the gigabyte could encourage more households to sign up for cheap, basic tiers and start to bring in more money if wealthier households start adopting data-hungry "4K" or "Ultra HD" TV sets.
The number of U.S. homes that don't get traditional television service continues to increase, but that doesn't mean they don't have TVs. The Nielsen company said in a report that three-quarters of the estimated 5 million homes that don't get TV signals over the airways or through cable, satellite or telecommunications companies have televisions anyway.
