Report: Emerging markets drive growth in pay-TV market

Despite the emergence of various over-the-top video providers, the pay-TV market will continue to grow thanks to emerging markets in places such as Latin America. A report by Infonetics Research said DirecTV Latin American saw a 15 percent increase in satellite subscribers year-over-year from the third quarter of 2012 to the same quarter last year.

Aereo suffers first major legal setback

A District Judge  argued that Aereo's retransmission of video signals is "indistinguishable from a cable company," and said that if Aereo continued to do business, it would damage broadcasters' ability to negotiate with legitimate licensees, siphon viewers away from their websites and subject them to potential piracy.

As with the previous three Google Fiber cities, Google is playing for the most favorable possible build conditions, including guarantees the company will be able to string fiber with a minimum of fuss, plus any regulatory grease that might be forthcoming. Cox, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and AT&T are at risk for a little more competition. Verizon? Not so much. Not at all, in fact.

Set-top box sales fuels strong Q4 for Arris

Arris reported its fourth-quarter earnings last night and announced that its set-top box shipments increased by a whopping 43 percent when compared to the previous quarter. That growth was spurred by increased shipments of its hybrid XG1 HD DVR for Comcast’s X1 platform, shipments to Latin America and increased shipments of its QIP box to Verizon.

DirecTV's fourth-quarter net income declined 14 percent, hurt in part by increased expenses. The performance still topped analysts' expectations. The No. 1 provider of satellite TV services in the U.S. also announced Wednesday that its board approved a new $3.5 billion stock repurchase program.

Synacor fuels Midcontinent’s TVE Sochi viewers

Midcontinent Communications has deployed Synacor's Cloud ID Auto Authentication feature in time for the Sochi Olympics, which has led to a decrease in TV Everywhere abandonment by its viewers. Using Synacor’s white label auto authentication, Midcontinent has reported a dramatic drop in TV Everywhere abandonment, coming in under 10 percent compared to a typical TV Everywhere abandonment rate of approximately 50 percent.

Broadcom, Elemental, enable 4K Olympics broadcast

Verizon tops customer service survey, Comcast last

While Verizon had the highest customer satisfaction results for its customer service calls, Comcast received the worst marks out of the nine companies that were surveyed. Out of the nine categories in the customer service survey, Comcast scored the lowest in eight, according to a survey by Vocal Laboratories (Vocalabs).

There's nothing like a bidding war to turn the stock of a lackluster company into a star. Shareholders of Time Warner Cable, which has been losing video customers, are big winners after rival Comcast agreed to buy the company for a nice premium. Entone to introduce hybrid gateway series

Service provider segment disappoints in Cisco's Q2

Cisco's Q2 results included a $655 million charge to address issues with memory components, and the prior quarter's results include a $926 million tax benefit. After adjusting for those and other special items in both periods, the company earned 47 cents per share, compared with 51 cents per share last year.

Comcast bags Time Warner Cable in $45.2 billion stock deal

Comcast, the nation’s largest cable operator and ISP, has proposed a $45.2 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable, which is the nation’s second-largest cable operator, in a deal that will have major ramifications on the cable and broadband industries. While the deal still needs to pass regulatory muster, Comcast will acquire all of Time Warner Cable’s 284.9 million shares.

Cablevision subs gain exclusive access to Fox 5 NY app

Authenticated Cablevision subscribers in the New York area can now tap into the Fox 5 NY app on their iOS and Android devices to access live streams. The app works in the New York tri-state area where WNYW is available. Available programs include “Good Day New York,” “Fox 5 News” at 5, 6, and 10 as well as “Wendy Williams,” “Dr. Oz” and other Fox shows.

Comcast stocks Warner Bros. content in electronic video store

Thanks to a recent agreement, Comcast subscribers can now buy movies and TV shows from Warner Bros. for viewing anywhere and on any device. The Warner Bros. content is the latest addition to Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand electronic video store, which made its debut in November.

Charter announces 13 nominees to Time Warner Cable’s board

As expected, Charter Communications fired off another salvo this morning as it prepares for its proxy fight for Time Warner Cable by announcing a full slate of 13 nominees to Time Warner Cable’s board of directors. Included on the list of nominees were former Adelphia and Charter CTO Marwan Fawaz, and former Time Warner Cable engineering whiz Jim Chiddix.
