CBS invests in Aereo alternative

CBS Corp. says it has made a minority investment in Syncbak, a technology company that allows mobile device users to pick up signals from their local TV stations over the Internet. The broadcaster said it would like to work closely with cable, satellite and telecommunications companies on building the capability.

Cox Communications announced this morning that its Cox TV Connect app now supports Amazon's Kindle Fire, Google's Nexus and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 and Note tablets. Prior to the addition of Android devices today, Cox’s app worked with iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices

TWC’s security service launches in Dallas

Dallas is the latest city to launch Time Warner Cable’s home automation service, which is called IntelligentHome. Time Warner Cable has previously said it planned on having IntelligentHome rolled out across its entire footprint by year’s end.

Aereo plans Boston TV party

Aereo is rolling its streaming TV service into the Boston area where it will take on Comcast and RCN. Aereo will square off against Comcast’s next generation, IP/QAM-based X1 platform in Beantown, which was made its debut in Boston last year.

Plala to deploy Android set-tops in Japan

The Japanese IPTV company will be deploying Android-based set-tops built by Sumitomo Electric Networks and based on new chips from STMicroelectronics. STM's Orly system-on-chip (SoC) includes a dedicated real-time multimedia processor, multi-standard video decoding engines, and video encoding.

Rogers TV Anyplace app streams into LG’s smart TVs

On Friday Rogers Communications laid claim to be being the first cable operator in Canada to launch an app for streaming on demand video to LG Electronics’ smart TVs. Rogers Anyplace TV will be available on 2012 and 2013 LG Smart TVs including OLED and Ultra HD. At launch, the app will host more than 1,000 hours of content.

DLNA hands out awards to 10 members

Comcast streams Outdoor Channel

Comcast and the Outdoor Channel have inked a multi-year distribution agreement that made the network’s content available across Comcast’s TV Everywhere platform. Effective immediately, the Outdoor Channel’s video content is now available on Comcast’s Xfinity on demand, the xfinity.com/tv web portal and through the Xfinity TV Player app.

Buckeye hires former NCTC CEO Abbas as new president

Buckeye Cablevision, which does business under the Buckeye CableSystem moniker, has brought former National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC) president and CEO Jeffry Abbas on board as its new president and general manager. At Buckeye CableSystem, Abbas will report to Joe Jensen, Block Communications’ executive vice president/cable and telecommunications.

Provo next after Austin for Google Fiber

Google will take over a troubled municipal fiber-optic system and make Provo, Utah, the third city to get its high-speed Internet service via fiber-optic cables. Google Fiber was rolled out in Kansas City, Mo., last year; company announced earlier this month it will make Austin, Texas, the second city to get ultra-fast Internet service.

Verizon FiOS adds outweigh DSL losses in Q1

Verizon added a total of 188,000 FiOS Internet and 169,000 FiOS video subscribers in its first quarter. Verizon ended the quarter with a total of 5.6 million FiOS Internet and 4.9 million FiOS video connections. It also migrated 83,000 homes from copper to fiber.

Arris names new executive leadership team

Arris CEO Bob Stanzione has assembled his new leadership team now that the deal to buy Motorola’s Home division closed yesterday. Former Charter Communications CTO Marwan Fawaz, who joined Motorola last year, won’t be a part of the new executive team, but Stanzione said in a company memo that Fawaz would stay on board over the next few weeks to help with the transition.

DirecTV sets up network with Mariners

The Mariners and DirecTVSports Networks are partners in a new regional sports network where the franchise will be the majority stakeholder in the operation. The deal will run through the conclusion of the 2030 baseball season with DirecTVSports Networks taking a minority position but overseeing the daily management of the network.

Arris’ pickup of Moto a done deal

Stick a fork in Arris’ acquisition of Motorola. Arris announced this morning that its $2.3 billion deal to buy Motorola Mobility’s Home division from Google was wrapped up. The completion of the acquisition, which was first announced Dec. 19, came after the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) signed off on the deal on Friday.

Comcast hires Adamson as VP of commercial business services in Mile High Region

Comcast has hired Shawn Adamson as its vice president of commercial business services for its Mile High Region. In her new job, Adamson will lead Comcast’s portfolio of business offerings and services, including the company’s Metro Ethernet suite of services that were launched two years ago.
