Hearst Corp. is betting $81.3 million that Internet video network AwesomenessTV will live up to its name. The investment announced Thursday gives Hearst a 25 percent stake in AwesomenessTV, which DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. acquired in May 2013.
Starting early next year, Arris will add N2TV’s streaming TV service, which is called Portico TV, to its over-the-top streaming platform for cable operators. John Malone’s Liberty Global has expanded its footprint in Puerto Rico by teaming up with Searchlight Capital Partners to buy Puerto Rico Cable Acquisition Co., which does business as Choice Cable TV, for about $272.5 million. Choice TV, which is the second largest cable and broadband provider in Puerto Rico, will be folded into Liberty Cablevision with Liberty Global owning a 60 percent stake and Searchlight owning 40 percent.

CBS Corp. and TV provider Dish Network Corp. have reached an agreement that ends a contract dispute that led to a short programming blackout in local markets around the country, the companies announced Saturday.CBS had blocked Dish from carrying the local channels of CBS-owned TV stations for about 12 hours starting around 7 p.m. Eastern time Friday.

Senators from both parties warned the National Football League on Thursday to get rid of a four-decade-old TV "blackout" rule or risk congressional action to restrict the league's lucrative antitrust exemption, which allows NFL teams to negotiate radio and television broadcast rights together. The blackout rule bars home games from being televised in a local market if they have not sold out, but is unfair to fans, lawmakers said.

Cable over builder WOW! is cutting 9 percent of its more than 3,000 employees. According to a story by DSLreports.com, the layoffs started Wednesday. A company spokeswoman said the elimination of the 270 jobs would continue through early next year.
