Rogers scores sports network for $167M

Rogers Communications announced it was plunking down $167 million to buy Score Media. Once the deal is finalized, Rogers will wholly own theScore Television Network and related assets, which will be a significant content boost to its existing Sportsnet assets.

According to a study, revenues for video platforms that distribute video on behalf of media and entertainment companies, including cable and satellite distributors, will reach $2.1 billion this year and double to more than $4 billion by 2017.

Time Warner Cable announced this morning that it has added live streaming from Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network to its TV Everywhere lineup. The video content is available to Time Warner Cable customers that subscribe to the two channels.

Comcast agrees to carry new beIN Sport network

The new beIN Sport network has reached an agreement with Comcast to be carried on its Xfinity TV. Owned by the Al-Jazeera Sport Media Network, beIN Sport will be carried in English on the Xfinity TV Sports Entertainment Package and in Spanish on the Xfinity TV MultiLatino Package.

Cox promotes Wolfe to GM of New England/Cleveland market

Cox Communications has promoted long-time employee John Wolfe to senior vice president and general manager of its New England/Cleveland market. In his new role at Cox, Wolfe now oversees the day-to-day operations for the company’s 1,400 employees in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Ohio.

Carlson antenna a big gain for white spaces

South Korean court rules Samsung didn't copy iPhone

South Korea's Samsung won a home court ruling in its global smartphone battle against Apple on Friday when judges in Seoul said the company didn't copy the look and feel of the U.S. company's iPhone, and that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

Concurrent landed a deal with J:Com, which is Japan’s largest cable operator, to help deliver TV Everywhere services to multiple devices. J:Com (Jupiter Communications) has deployed Concurrent’s MediaHawk VX to serve up multi-screen VOD services to mobile devices and PCs.

Envivio encoder bumps up efficiency

The company claims the latest version of its transcoding software can improve transcoding speed by up to 35 percent. Envivio introduced a new version of its on-demand transcoding software that the company’s own testing indicates an improvement of up to 35 percent in file-to-file transcoding speed, as compared to competing platforms that require hardware acceleration.

MoCA ups Gelphman to VP of marketing, member relations

The Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) recently promoted Rob Gelphman to the newly created position of vice president of marketing and member relations. Prior to his promotion, Gelphman was chair of the marketing work group, a position he held for the last seven years. Comcast RDK picks up steam with addition of Motorola

Comcast, Music Choice cue up Hispanic music in VOD

Comcast said the 500 videos, not all of which are available yet, represented the largest collection of Hispanic music videos and original artist content on a VOD platform. The videos span a variety of Spanish music genres, including pop, rock, romance, tropical, regional and children’s music.

Ericsson debuts encoder for mobile video

Ericsson is on the verge of hitting the market with a new HEVC/H.265 encoder for the delivery of live and linear TV over mobile networks to mobile devices. The device, based on the H.265 proposed standard, nearly doubles compression rates, making it especially desirable for transmission of video on LTE networks, where bandwidth is an even more limited resource than elsewhere.

Lantiq prepares for VoLTE home gateway

The chip designer is working with two software companies, D2 Technologies and Ecrio, to create a gateway reference design that will support voice over LTE (VoLTE) services in consumers’ homes. VoLTE, a software stack built around the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), provides native voice and other rich media services on LTE networks.

In her new role, Bryant will oversee budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting and analysis, purchasing, capital planning and information technology, and systems throughout the 15 states that comprise the Central Division.

TiVo strikes deal with GCI

Alaskan telecommunications company GCI announced that it is going with TiVo for its next-generation whole-home TV platform. It will start deploying TiVo’s platform this year before offering it across its entire footprint next year. GCI will rely on TiVo to enable its whole-home platform.

Comcast Business Services is fueling Community College of Baltimore County’s distance learning initiatives through its Ethernet services. CCBC is using Comcast’s Ethernet services in its “Fab Lab,” which is an interactive workshop that allows users to take advantage of digital fabrication technologies by using files of two- or three-dimensional computer drawings to replicate products onto different types of equipment.
