Netflix has broken through the pay TV barrier by announcing this morning it will integrate its streaming service with Virgin Media’s TiVo set-top boxes. Starting this week, Virgin Media subscribers with TiVo set-top boxes will be able to toggle back and forth between Netflix’s streaming library and Virgin Media’s content from the same guide.
Thanks to a new TV Everywhere-based agreement, Cablevision’s video subscribers are now able to tune into Music Choice’s 46 commercial free music channels and videos across the nation on any broadband connection. Yahoo is auditioning for a bigger role on iPhones and iPads with the release of its first mobile application tailored for watching video on touch-control screens. The app, called Yahoo Screen, is set up to make the experience of sifting through video on smartphones and tablet computers more like channel surfing on a television.

RGB Networks has struck a deal with Conax to help service providers deliver secure adaptive bit rate (ABR) TV Everywhere services to their authenticated subscribers. With the partnership, the companies are integrating RGB’s TransAct Packager with Conax’s conditional access/digital rights (DRM) platform to ensure multi-screen services are delivered to the correct viewers.

After making its debut last year, Bright House Networks Business Solutions’ “Set Back Box”—based HD video service is gaining traction throughout hospitality markets in Orlando and Tampa Bay, Fla. The set back boxes, which are provided by ADB, are unobtrusive devices that are mounted to the back of TVs in the hotels.

The HDMI Forum has released the HDMI Version 2.0 specification, which will provide a way to get Ultra HD (4K) signals from a set-top box or gateway to a television. HDMI 2.0 is fully backward compatible with earlier versions of the standard, and uses the same cables and connectors as earlier versions.

Chinese consumer electronics company Hisense will deploy Hillcrest’s FreeSpace motion control software in its next-generation of Smart TVs and set-top boxes. Freespace enables point-and-click, gesture and motion control of Smart TV devices through in-air movements of a handheld remote control.
