Comcast is launching the next phase of its X1 platform in Boston by offering a cloud-based DVR service and the ability to watch live, in-home streaming on mobile devices via a new app. The cloud-based DVR recordings are provisioned over Comcast’s managed IP network, and are another element of its IP-based Viper platform.

After confirming Friday that it was out of capacity in New York City, Aereo announced this morning that it’s antenna and cloud-based TV service would launch in San Antonio on Feb. 19. On Friday, Aereo CEO and founder Chet Kanojia confirmed on his Twitter account that the company was out of capacity in the New York City area, which is where the service first launched.
Thanks to new subscribers and increased ARPU in North America and Western Europe, worldwide telco IPTV and satellite revenues increased in the first half of last year. Conversely, Infonetics Research said cable revenue was down a percent over the same period, mainly due to loss of subscribers in North America.
Time Warner Cable Business Class (TWCBC) announced this morning that it was the first North American service provider to receive all six retail Carrier Ethernet (CE) 2.0 certifications granted by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF). RCN Business announced that WBL Services has selected it to provide connectivity for the media center’s communications and data transport in the New York tri-state area for Sunday’s Super Bowl. Former Motorola executive Dan Moloney has been named to Lantiq’s board of directors. Munich-based Lantiq is a supplier of chips and software for broadband access and home networking, which is right up Moloney’s alley after his time at Motorola.
In its first quarterly gain of basic video subscribers in six and half years, Comcast announced this morning that it had added 43,000 video subscribers in the fourth quarter. Comcast’s robust fourth quarter earnings came on the heels of rumors that it was in talks with Charter Communications to divide up Time Warner Cable.
Suddenlink Communications announced it has promoted Mike Pflantz to senior vice president of corporate finance and accounting at the company’s headquarters in St. Louis. Suddenlink also announced that Jared Sonne was promoted to the position of vice president of operations for the company’s Texoma Region.
John Malone can scratch Ziggo off of his “to do” list now that his Liberty Global has picked up the rest of Ziggo that it didn’t already own in a $13.7 billion cash and stock deal. After purchasing a 28.5 percent stake in Ziggo in March of last year, Malone and Liberty Global had been in hot pursuit of the rest of Netherlands-based Ziggo since August.
Over the past few Olympics, NBC has shown more live coverage over the Internet than it has on TV. For the upcoming Winter Games, Comcast's Xfinity TV subscribers will be able to tap the breadth of that online coverage on their big screens.
The FCC next year will embark on the complicated process of auctioning off 600 MHz spectrum licenses. Part of that entails compensating and relocating/repacking the many low-power TV (LPTV) broadcasters that currently occupy those airwaves. For many, it’s become a legitimate concern that many of the free TV stations simply won’t continue on after the auction.
MSOs continue to gradually accrete more networks for their TV Everywhere line-ups. Time Warner Cable and ally Bright House Networks said they have just signed A&E, History and Lifetime. TWC is already hosting the apps for those networks as part of its TV Everywhere offerings. Bright House Networks will follow next week.
Netflix ended December with 33.4 million U.S. subscribers who stream video over high-speed Internet connections, up from 31.1 million in September. The company picked up another 1.74 million subscribers outside the U.S. to end last year with 10.9 million international customers.
Comcast and NBCUniversal have struck a wide-ranging, 10-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers to provide a range of services at the new Levi’s Stadium. Hooking up professional sports stadiums with its Ethernet and Wi-Fi services is nothing for new Comcast, but the deal with the 49ers also included programming elements as well.
Multi-screen vendor Clearleap has hired John Smith as vice president, new market development. Smith most recently served as senior vice president, North American sales at Vubiquity, which is a global provider of multiplatform video services.
