Broadcom has introduced a chip for DOCSIS 3.0 gateways that offer 1 Gbps Wi-Fi. Broadcom’s new chip integrates a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with the emerging IEEE 802.11ac version of Wi-Fi, which is designed to provide throughputs up to 1 Gbps.
Sigma Designs has introduced a pair of media processors that integrate HPNA connectivity for IPTV and hybrid STBs. Both media processors feature 3-D video, integrated graphics processing, video scaling, DDR3 memory support, a customizable UI and a power-efficient CPU that can deliver OTT content.
The U.S. cable industry appears to have decided what its wireless strategy is: It is going to create a vast public Wi-Fi network that requisitions bandwidth from all the home routers it has installed and allocate it to public access. Broadcom is ready with software to enable the approach.

France’s Bouygues Telecom is installing Pace’s Helium Unified Gateway Software to enable faster rollouts of new services and apps across a range of gateway devices. Bouygues Telecom will sell Pace’s new Helium software across all of its new BBOX Sensation gateways, as well as legacy devices, in 1.3 million subscriber homes.
TiVo whittled its losses as more subscribers signed up for the digital video recorders that turned the company into a household name. The results were highlighted by a gain of 230,000 subscribers. That left TiVo with 2.7 million subscribers.
TiVo is preparing to hit the market with its retail transcoder/router that enables TiVo Premiere DVR users to distribute up to four simultaneous streams to Apple iOS devices. The TiVo Stream, announced earlier this year, will sell for $130 and will be available from TiVo on Sept. 6 and at Best Buy shortly thereafter.
AJK is the first cable operator in India to use a single headend to serve the full range of display devices – TV set-top boxes, connected TVs, PCs, tablets and mobile phones – according to Envivio. AJK’s service, called Reena TV, is targeting more than 200,000 customers for their digital service.

Tektronix introduced a new version of its video quality monitors that adds the ability to monitor video post-QAM RF video, complementing the ability to evaluate video quality in the digital domain.
Carlson announced a new antenna specifically designed to support the use of white-space spectrum. The company’s new omnidirectional base station antenna provides high gain across the entire UHF spectrum, which will help improve overall performance of white space transmissions.
When it comes to worldwide router revenues, Cisco is still the top dog, but in a recent report, Huawei came in second overall. Overall, a report by Infonetics Research found that the global service provider router and switch market, including carrier Ethernet switches and IP edge and core routers, grew 4 percent, to $3.5 billion, in the second quarter of this year when compared to the previous quarter.
