Service provider segment powers Cisco's Q2

Cisco reported that second quarter revenue in its Service Provider Video segment grew 30 percent year over year, in its Wireless segment by 27 percent, and in its Data Center segment 77 percent; the average for the company as a whole was 5 percent.

Troy Cablevision's 100G network up and running

Troy Cablevison has installed a 100G network in Alabama, using equipment from Optelian. Using funding from the broadband stimulus – specifically the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 – Troy Cablevision installed Optelian’s MPX-9110 Flexible 100 Gbps Platform.

Home network interop standard ratified

The Smart Energy Profile 2 (SEP 2) was developed to enable home energy information, control and management applications, as well as utility communications to devices in and around the home, via wired and wireless connections using IP. Devices might include thermostats, appliances, electric meters, gateways, and vehicles.

Aurora Networks taps Soleto for director of sales in Canada, Alaska

Optical network vendor Aurora Networks announced this morning that it had hired Vince Soleto as its new director of sales in Canada and Alaska. Soleto previously served as regional sales manager for ATX Networks where he was responsible for selling that company’s products in the same areas.

 Samsung's new adaptive array transceiver technology will allow data to transmit at higher frequencies than currently possible. Samsung's transceiver transmits data in the millimeter-wave band at a frequency of 28 GHz at a speed of up to 1.056 Gbps to a distance of up to 2 kilometers.

Study: OTN switching ready for primetime

Optical transport networks (OTN) switching are reaching mainstream status with service providers. To wit: 86 percent of the service providers surveyed by Infonetics Research said they planned to deploy OTN switching. Packet-optical is a niche market today, representing only 10 percent of all optical spending, but by 2016 nearly all operator respondents want systems that integrate OTN switching and packet switching in the same platform

Telesystem begins network upgrade

Buckeye Cablesystem sister company Telesystem said it has embarked on a network upgrade to achieve 99.999 percent availability for its IP-based services. Five-nines availability translates to no more than 5.26 minutes of downtime per rolling year.
