Study: TV Everywhere still hamstrung by licensing issues

Consumers want to watch their videos anytime, anywhere and on any device, but content licensing issues are shackling those efforts, according to a recent study. Infonetics Research pinged pay-TV operators in regard to their multi-screen video services and delivering live and file-based content to subscribers across multiple devices.

Cablevision launches Spanish Web portal

In order to better connect its Hispanic customer base with its services, Cablevision announced that it has launched a new Web portal, Optimum.net en Español. The new Web portal knits together Cablevision’s Optimum services with full Spanish-language features.

Time Warner Cable, Vudu among customer wins for Jinni

Jinni, whose search engine helps users find video content intuitively, announced seven customer wins for the fourth quarter of last year, including Time Warner Cable and Vudu. Vudu’s streaming service is available through Wal-Mart. The Jinni service is powered by the Entertainment Genome.

Comcast said it’s the first multichannel provider to bring its authenticated subscribers live streaming of ESPN Buzzer Beater via its Xfinity.com/TV Web portal. ESPN Buzzer Beater is ESPN’s weekly HD college basketball live cut-in and highlights network.

Aereo to make its streaming service available in 22 more cities

Bolstered by a $38 million second round of financing, controversial streaming provider Aereo plans on expanding its service to 22 more cities across the nation this year. Aereo launched its streaming service in New York City and was promptly sued by major broadcast networks.

Azuki backs multi-screen distribution of apps

ES3 is teaming with Azuki Systems to demonstrate how TumbleBooks TV can be turned into a multi-screen service accessible on mobile devices in the home and elsewhere. ES3 develops apps for the Microsoft Mediaroom environment. TumbleBooks TV is an app that delivers read-along children’s books to the TV.

Mediacom serves up BTN2Go in multiple states

CES: Cablevision connects with Netflix on CDN deal

Cablevision has signed on to deliver Netflix’s videos, including “Netflix Super HD” and 3-D TV content, over its own network through Netflix’s Open Connect content delivery network (CDN). Other ISPs that have signed on to use Netflix’s Open Connect include Virgin Media and British Telecom.

CES: Arris debuts Comcast RDK-based gateway

Arris introduced a new whole-home network and entertainment gateway designed specifically for triple-play and quad-play customers. The company demonstrated its hybrid MG2402 gateway, based on the reference design kit (RDK) from Comcast, in the Intel booth at CES.

CES: Motorola provisions new media server for Verizon

Netgear adds Sling; Sling expands features

Netgear has added Sling technology to a line of streaming media players. Meanwhile, Sling Media has upgraded the search and navigation software for its own Slingbox products. Netgear has added the SlingPlayer to its NeoTV OTT boxes, including the NeoTV Prime with Google TV.
