Synacor, which is a TV Everywhere and Web portal vendor, announced this morning it had bought Android development company Teknision for an undisclosed sum. The addition of Ottawa-based Teknision will allow Synacor to branch out into the mobile arena while adding an Android-based platform for developers and users.

amsung Electronics Co. reported another record quarterly profit as a revival in its semiconductor business and strong shipments of cheaper handsets offset flat sales of high-end smartphones. AT&T U-verse has extended the availability of live TV channels to Android devices. Twenty of those 100 channels are available for viewing outside the home. Those same 100 channels are also available for home viewing through AT&T’s Uverse.com web portal.
Comcast has launched its Xfinity WiFi service in Utah by lighting up 900 access points in Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo and other cities along the Wasatch Front. Integrating Sling technology into one of its boxes apparently wasn’t enough. Arris has arranged with Sling Media to become the exclusive worldwide distributor of gateways and standalone devices that integrate Sling technology. Arris will also eventually take control of worldwide licensing of the technology.
The main challenge of switching to an IP-based infrastructure is that it doesn’t happen overnight. To make the transition, an operator needs to support two infrastructures for some period of time: a QAM infrastructure that uses MPEG-2 for video compression and a second silo for IP that relies on a mix of MPEG-4 and adaptive bit rate technology.
