Microsoft wants you to think of Xbox One as more than a game machine. You can use it to watch movies on Netflix and Hulu Plus. You can hook it up to your cable box to watch live TV. You can Skype your grandma and share family photos through the SkyDrive storage service.
HBO Go’s TV Everywhere service is now available on Google’s Chromecast streaming adapter. With shows such as “Game of Thrones,” HBO Go has proven to be one of the more popular streaming services for authenticated subscribers while the $35 Chromecast device has also been well received since it hit the market this past summer.

According to a recent study on the Wi-Fi hotspot market, tier 1 mobile operators expect 22 percent of all additional data capacity added during the 2013-2014 timeframe to come from Wi-Fi offload. In an effort to stave off any potential disruptions to their customers, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks reached an early renewal of their retransmission agreement with Discovery Communications. Home media gateways, which blend traditional linear TV with TV Everywhere services, will surpass 24 million units shipped by 2017, according to a recent study. This year global unit shipments of home media gateway products are on track to reach nearly 10 million, which would top the 7.7 million units that shipped in 2012, according to a report by MRG.

Synacor, which is a TV Everywhere and Web portal vendor, announced this morning it had bought Android development company Teknision for an undisclosed sum. Charter will begin to field test the ActiveVideo / Zodiac UI in Fort Worth in the next few days. It will roll out with employees and then the general public.If that cloud-based UI works as expected, Charter will do a commercial rollout later in the second quarter of next year.
AT&T’s home automation and security service, which is called “Digital Life,” will soon be available in six new markets.
