Game on: TWC offers 300 live channels on Xbox

As promised, Time Warner Cable is now delivering 300 live channels to its subscribers over Xbox gaming consoles. Time Warner Cable first announced in June that it would be adding the Xbox to its list of TV Everywhere devices. The service is delivered over Time Warner Cable’s separate IP network via the cable operator’s My TWC TV app.

Research: Google’s Chromecast a market game-changer

According to new research, the smart set-top box and dongle market is projected to pass 18 million units this year, which was higher than original forecast, due to the arrival of Google’s Chromecast device. ABI Research’s study said that the overall market was expected to have a 10.8 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from this year to 2018. 

NCTC serves up Tennis Channel to members

he National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC) is serving up TV Everywhere content from the Tennis Channel on its authenticated WatchTVEverywhere (WTVE) platform. NCTC members that offer the Tennis Channel through the NCTC’s master agreement will be able to offer the network’s live stream, including the 2013 U.S. Open that starts today, on the WTVE platform to their subscribers.

Mediacom tunes up TVE web portal with Synacor

Mediacom Communications has extended its four-year deal with Synacor, which included beefing up its web portal with more TV Everywhere services. The new web portal site gives Mediacom subscribers access to additional content and services from one online location with a single login for authentication.

TiVo refreshes lineup with 6-tuner Roamio DVRs

TiVo Inc. announced a new line of digital video recorders Tuesday to give television viewers more control over what they watch on traditional channels and over the Internet. The fifth-generation DVRs from the company that pioneered the devices come as consumers have a growing number of choices for finding and watching TV shows and movies.

Azuki turns LG Stick into service provider "set-top"

Azuki Systems said it has integrated its Azuki Media Platform with the new Android Stick IP set-top box from LG Electronics. The combination is designed to enable service providers to deliver a broadband HDTV service experience on any TV in the home, without requiring a traditional set-top box and the cost and inconvenience of a truck roll.

TiVo nabs Emmy; launches Pace gateway with GCI

DVR pioneer TiVo has snagged an Emmy and also announced that Alaska-based GCI was the first North American cable operator to deploy Pace’s XGI gateway on its user interface platform. The Emmy honored TiVo’s whole-home platform, which includes the TiVo Premiere DVR, TiVo Mini and TiVo Stream

Study: Comcast’s hotspots top AT&T, Boingo

According to a recent study by Allion USA, Comcast’s public hotspots were faster than AT&T and Boingo Wireless’ hotspots by a significant margin. The study across four cities found that Comcast’s Xfinity WiFi hotspots had faster download speeds an up to three times faster upload speeds.

Clearleaps sets European HQ in Amsterdam

Clearleap has opened a European headquarters in Amsterdam, after having established a pair of data centers there, one in Amsterdam and another in Frankfurt. The company said it has appointed Preben Schack as vice president of sales EMEA to drive growth and sales across Europe.

Conax packages hosted multiscreen for LatAm ops

Conax has devised a hosted IP solution, specifically for the Latin America pay-TV market, that is based on its own Contego Unite system and includes middleware from partner Cubiware. The solution would be installed by system integrator Bold MSS. Customers will be able to use the system to offer services that include OTT VOD and multiscreen delivery.

GetGlue sticks to Dish’s iPad app

Dish Network has blended in social media features from GetGlue into its Dish Explorer app. With GetGlue, Dish subscribers are now able to check-in and connect with their favorite TV shows, movies and sporting events on their iPads via the app.

TWC tunes up app for Samsung TVs

Time Warner Cable subscribers with certain models of Samsung Smart TVs are now able to watch more than 5,000 TV shows and movies on demand with content from over 94 providers. After announcing last month it was going to provision TV services to 2012 and 2013 Samsung Smart TVs, Time Warner Cable kick started the service on its TWC TV app yesterday.

Elemental transcodes for German public broadcaster

German public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) has deployed Elemental Technologies’ Elemental Live video processing systems to encode live content. Elemental systems allow NDR to create video streams of program broadcasts, news and special events for publicly and freely accessible web portals and mobile apps.

Report: OTT, multi-screen push surge in ABR, transcoders

Faced with increased competition, pay-TV operators are investing in more adaptive bit rate gear and transcoders, according to a recent report. More transcoders are needed to prepare linear broadcast and file-based content for multi-screen distribution to subscribers, according to the report by Infonetics Research.

Google unveils new Internet TV device

Google is betting consumers will pay slightly more for a sleeker, more powerful version of its Nexus 7 tablet as the Internet company escalates its rivalry with Apple and Amazon.com in technology's key battleground — the mobile computing market. The fancier devices unveiled Wednesday in San Francisco will go on sale in the U.S next Tuesday in Google's online store and numerous retailers with brick-and-mortar stores. 

TWC updates app with troubleshooting, other new features

Time Warner Cable has added some new bells and whistlers to its MY TWC app, which included a new feature that lets residential users troubleshoot their triple play services. With the fourth update to the app, Time Warner Cable subscribers can also get up to the minute service alerts in their area and view real-time account information directly from their phone or tablet.

Verizon stirs in Watch Disney, Watch ABC to TVE mix

Verizon’s FiOS subscribers can now tap into the “Watch” authenticated services from Disney and ABC thanks to a new TV Everywhere agreement. The expanded agreement between Verizon and the Disney and ESPN Media Networks Group covers Watch ABC, Disney Channel, Watch Disney XD and Watch Disney Junior, as well as the soon to be launched Watch ABC Family service. 

Comcast’s X1 suits up in parts of Delaware, Maryland

Arris ramps production on new flagship CMTS

The company said its E6000 is now generally available. The E6000 Converged Edge Router (CER) was announced last Fall, and was deployed by Comcast and several other as yet unidentified customers in a trial program. The new CMTS will be the vehicle that Arris rides toward the CCAP architecture.

RCN debuts mobile app for iOS, Android devices

RCN has launched a mobile app that allows its subscribers to check their home voicemails remotely. The app, which is called MyRCN, also lets users update contact information, manage passwords and security questions, pay bills, set up auto payment, view current and past statements and view RCN phone call history.

NY judge blasts refusal to review online TV ruling

Buckeye set to upgrade provisioning for IPv6

Buckeye CableSystem is preparing to upgrade its installed provisioning system, in advance of initiating a migration to support for IPv6. The company uses Incognito Software’s Broadband Command Center to activate and provision voice and data services for its approximately 130,000 subscribers.
