Pushed along by high demand in the PON sector, the worldwide broadband access market, which also includes DSL and cable technologies, set a new record of $11.5 billion last year. Dell’Oro Group senior analyst Alam Tamboli said PON spending had picked up in North American last year with the advent of gigabit networks, but those deployments were small when compared to China.

In an effort to expand its geographic reach and business portfolio, CommScope Holding announced this morning that it was buying TE Connectivity’s telecom, enterprise and wireless businesses for about $3 billion in cash. The deal included Switzerland-based TE’s telecommunications, enterprise networks and wireless businesses, which generated $1.9 billion in annual revenue last year.
Google said Tuesday it has selected four metro areas in the Southeast to receive its fiber optic service that can deliver Internet speeds at more than 50 times the national broadband average. The company said it will bring gigabit-speed service to Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta; and Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte in North Carolina.
The city of Jasper, Indiana, said it has entered a deal with Smithville Communications and its Smithville Telecom subsidiary to rewire the city with fiber. Smithville Telecom will be based on equipment from Calix, and connectivity will be FTTP. Access is going to be 1 Gbps symmetrical.

The deadline for abstract submissions, which will be reviewed by the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo2015 Program Committee that’s chaired by Liberty Global CTO and EVP Balan Nair, is Feb. 17.
While the service provider industry is rife with almost daily announcements on gigabit service rollouts, a large chunk of consumers are tuned out when it comes to understanding, letting alone wanting, the faster speeds. According to a survey by Pivot Group and Telecompetitor, 87 percent of its 800 respondents across the nation had never heard of “gigabit” before the survey.
David Kniffin has joined Lightpath, a division of Cablevision, as its senior vice president and chief administration officer. In his new job, Kniffin is now in charge of all Lightpath’s finance and administrative functions. As senior vice president of financial planning at Cablevision, Kniffin worked on the financial reporting, budget and forecasting processes for Lightpath and other Cablevision business units.
Today it remains somewhat murky where the whole pay TV business is going, or precisely what it will look like when it gets there, but MSOs know for certain they need to prepare their networks to deliver whatever has to be delivered, and Cable-Tec Expo made it crystal clear that those networks will still depend heavily on DOCSIS 3.1.

Bright House Networks Enterprise Solutions is providing the Epicurean, Le Meridien and Aloft Hotel Tampa Downtown with its fiber-based dedicated Internet access (DIA), High HD video, and telephone trunking services.
Cox Communications has provisioned its first gigabit service in California to an apartment complex in Irvine. Residents of the Irvine Company’s Park Place Apartment Homes now have access to Cox’s 1-Gig service. Cox isn’t saying which vendors its using for its gigabit tier, but has said it would use a combination of fiber and DOCSIS 3.1 once the latter becomes available.
AT&T announced this morning that its GigaPower service was now live in areas of Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Winston-Salem, N.C. Earlier this year, AT&T teamed up with the North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) to rollout its fiber-based 1-Gig service to six cities in North Carolina.
Spurred on by the deployment of residential gateways, worldwide customer premise equipment (CPE) shipments were projected to reach 152 million by the end of this year. In the cable CPE sector, ABI Research expects DOCSIS 3.0 device shipments will grow 11 percent this year, accounting for nearly 85 percent of the total cable CPE shipments.
While Google Fiber, CenturyLink, Cox Communications, and AT&T, among others, are targeting larger cities with their 1-gigabit services, TDS Telecom is continuing to rack up small town deployments across four states. This week TDS Telecom started offering its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) product in broader areas of Mt. Juliet and La Vergne, Tenn. with plans to roll out the service in Farragut and Halls, Tenn. and St. Marys, Ga. next week.
Cogeco Data Services will launch its Public Cloud service early next year, which it said was Canada’s first neutral public cloud offering. The service will provide businesses access to public, private and hybrid cloud capabilities.
For all the buzz Google is inspiring with Google Fiber, its 1 Gbps customers still have no idea how to get even close to exhausting that bounty. So do Google’s competitors need install fiber? With little real demand for 1 Gbps and with D3.1 and G.fast able to support 1 Gbps if and when it’s needed, the answer appears to be no, with some exceptions.

Ahead of signing up customers next month for its 1-Gig service in some areas of Austin, Google Fiber has posted pricing details on its Website. Google Fiber’s standalone, symmetrical gigabit offering costs $70 a month while a bundle of 150 TV channels and the 1-Gig service checks in at $130 a month.
Lightpath, the commercial services division of Cablevision, has promoted Joseph Flynn to the position of senior vice president of sales. In his new role, Flynn is tasked with overseeing Lightpath’s sales operation, which includes day-to-day leadership and management of all its sales functions.
