Mediaroom VP joins SeaWell board

Pete Thompson, vice president of Microsoft Mediaroom, has joined the board of directors of SeaWell Networks. Before joining Microsoft, Thompson developed new products and services at T-Mobile, Graviton, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola and Levi Strauss & Co.

Comcast's Q1 fueled by price hikes

Price increases on video service and customers upgrading to HD packages and digital video recorders (DVRs) helped boost Comcast’s first quarter profit by 17 percent. It lost 60K basic video subs, but  increased its broadband subscriber count by 433,000 in the quarter. It also added 211,000 new voice customers.

Cablevision sells off theatre chain

Cablevision continued divesting non-core businesses with the sale of the vast majority of its Clearview Cinema chain of movie theatres to Bow Tie Cinemas, though the company will retain ownership of the Ziegfeld in New York City. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Former AOL exec replaces Esteves as TWC’s CFO

Time Warner Cable announced yesterday afternoon that former AOL executive Arthur Minson will replace Irene Esteves as the company’s chief financial officer. Minson, who formerly worked at Time Warner Cable, will start his new job on Thursday while Esteves’ last day is tomorrow.

Comcast Business extends network to N.H. business park

Comcast Business announced today that it had made a major investment to serve up its entire suite of Ethernet, data, voice and video services to 250 businesses in Portsmouth, N.H. The businesses are located in Pease International Tradeport, which was an Air Force base that has been turned into a business park.

AT&T locks up home automation deployments

Starting today, AT&T’s home automation and security service, which it calls Digital Life, is available in 15 cities across the nation. AT&T said in January that it planned on launching Digital Life in March to eight cities, but delayed the launch until this month in order to offer the service in more markets.

Time Warner Cable’s 1Q profit driven by business services

An increase in Time Warner Cable’s business services revenue helped the cable operator’s bottom line in the first quarter, but the nation’s second-largest cable operator continued to bleed out basic video subscribers. For the quarter, Time Warner Cable lost 119,000 basic video subscribers, which were more than the 91,000 that analysts had projected.

TWC boots up free Wi-Fi in Austin

Time Warner Cable has started to deploy its Wi-Fi service, which is called TWC WiFi,  to its subscribers in Austin, Texas. There are currently several dozen access points deployed in Austin to date, but the cable operator plans on having up to 1,000 go live this year.

Comcast, EcoFactor win home automation award

Home automation vendor EcoFactor recently won an award from GTM Research for working with Comcast on the cable operator’s Xfinity Home service. Last year EcoFactor integrated its SaaS infrastructure with Comcast to provide Xfinity Home subscribers monthly HVAC savings on their energy bills.

ActiveVideo taps Brockman as CTO

ActiveVideo has promoted Ronald Brockmann to CTO. The position has been open since Rogers Communications hired away ActiveVideo’s previous CTO, John Callahan, almost a year ago. Brockmann was working for Avinity Systems when ActiveVideo acquired it three years ago.

RCN partners up to enable free Wi-Fi service in Boston

RCN Business Services has forged a partnership with two other companies that will enable free Wi-Fi access in the Boston area. RCN’s piece of the puzzle is providing the backhaul necessary to connect the small cells to the core network. 

TWC taps Meeks to run Business Services

Time Warner Cable has hired Phil Meeks, who had been running Cox Business for the last few years, to run its Business Services unit. Meeks will get the new title of executive vice president and chief operating officer for Business Services.

Rogers prospers in first quarter

Rogers lost 25,000 TV customers, leaving it with 2.18 million at the end of the quarter. Those losses were measured against a gain of 26,000 broadband subscribers, bringing the total of wireline Internet customers to 1.89 million. Toss in 17,000 new phone subscribers, and Rogers increased its overall number of revenue generation units by 35,000, to 5.1 million.

TWC’s security service launches in Dallas

Dallas is the latest city to launch Time Warner  Cable’s home automation service, which is called IntelligentHome. Time Warner Cable has previously said it planned on having IntelligentHome rolled out across its entire footprint by year’s end.
