The month-long blackout of CBS programming put a damper on Time Warner Cable’s third quarter results, which included the loss of 306,000 residential TV subscribers in the quarter. While the amount of video subscribers lost in the third quarter exceeded analysts’ expectations of 183,000, Time Warner Cable also bled 24,000 data subscribers and 128,000 voice customers on the residential side.
After 41 years in the cable industry, Time Warner Cable CEO and Chairman Glenn Britt took part in his last quarterly earnings conference call this morning. AT&T reported its U-verse TV and Internet service reached 10 million subscribers during the third quarter, with one of the biggest gains in TV viewers in the history of the service. AT&T's third-quarter profit and revenue increased as the nation's largest telecommunications company added more smartphone and broadband subscribers.

Sony is hoping that providing sharable movie clips and extras like deleted scenes will prompt more people to buy digital movies. Pace is buying Aurora Networks for $310 million, a deal that will combine the former’s set-top and gateway business with the latter’s fiber access network portfolio. Pace said it intends to maintain the Aurora brand, and keep Aurora’s current management team in place after the acquisition.

Communications equipment maker Tellabs has agreed to be acquired for $891 million by investment firm Marlin Equity Partners. The deal calls for Marlin to buy all of Tellabs shares for $2.45 each. The deal is expected to close during the fourth quarter.
CableLabs and the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) announced this morning that they would work in tandem to accelerate the worldwide development and deployment of new cable network technologies. The cable industry’s support organizations, which also include the NCTA, have become more aligned over the past few years at the behest of the cable operators that they serve.
