Comcast all in on NBCUniversal; broadband subs drive Q4

Comcast announced that it was buying out General Electric’s 49 percent stake in NBCUniversal for $16.7 billion instead of waiting until next year’s previously scheduled date of July to take full control of NBCUniversal. Comcast earned $1.52 billion, or 56 cents per share, in the fourth quarter.

Intel working on TV set-top box to replace cable

Intel said it will sell a set-top box that brings Internet-delivered movies and shows to a TV set this year. Erik Huggers, general manager of Intel Media, said the company plans to sell a box that will offer "a vastly superior experience" to today's cable boxes.

Ohio telco adopts Adtran’s video platform

Glandorf Telephone has installed Adtran’s broadband platform to provide broadband and video services to its customers in the northwestern part of Ohio. Glandorf is using Adtran’s Total Access 5000 to deliver services both on its DSL network and via FTTH lines.

Report: Global mobile phone sales declined 1.7% in 2012

Global mobile phone sales totaled 1.75 billion units in 2012, marking a 1.7 percent decrease to the amount of handsets snatched up by end users in 2011. Smartphones rang up the most sales, with 207.7 million units moving in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Cogeco upgrades business broadband service

ThinkAnalytics doubles its revenue

Ruckus hires Cisco Wi-Fi expert

Ruckus Wireless has hired David Stephenson, formerly with Cisco Systems, as senior principal engineer within its System Architecture group. Stephenson worked at Cisco for nearly 14 years within its Wireless Networking Business Unit, where he was responsible for the technical architecture of Hotspot 2.0.
