FTC sues DirecTV for deceptive advertising

DirecTV was offering a 12-month discount, without adequate notice that the discount comes only with a 24-month contract. Other terms of the deal were not disclosed in a conspicuous way, the FTC said, charging the company with hiding the details of the offer in fine print.

FiOS drops The Weather Channel over fee dispute

GPON spending fuels big year for broadband equipment

Robust GPON equipment sales played a key role in driving the worldwide broadband equipment market to a record year in 2014. Spending on broadband aggregation equipment rose 9 percent in 2014, to $8.2 billion, according to a recent report by Infonetics Research.

Charter re-brands biz services as Spectrum Business

Charter Communications announced this morning that it had renamed its Charter Business division “Spectrum Business.” The new name for commercial services is now aligned with the residential Charter Spectrum services that were first announced two years ago.

HP to fork out $2.7 billion to buy Aruba Networks

Hewlett-Packard is making a move into the mobile wireless market with today’s news that it has reached a deal to buy wireless networking vendor Aruba Networks for about $2.7 billion. HP said the deal would combine Aruba’s wireless mobility offerings—which include Wi-Fi systems that have been installed in airports, shopping malls, hotels and universities—with its switching portfolio.

TWC’s NaviSite launches new West Coast data center

Time Warner Cable’s NaviSite has opened the doors on a new enterprise class data center in Santa Clara, Calif. The state-of-the-art data center—the building is owned by data center provider Digital Realty—joined NaviSite’s nine existing data centers across the United States and the United Kingdom.

Survey says cloud lives up to hype for enterprise businesses

A recent survey by communications and enterprise IT service provider Tata Communications found that enterprise organizations with more than 500 employees saw tangible benefits to their cloud computing efforts. The survey results included 85 percent of the respondents saying that the cloud had lived up to the industry hype, while 23 percent said it had exceeded their expectations.

Report: Broadband access market scales to $11.5 billion in 2014

Pushed along by high demand in the PON sector, the worldwide broadband access market, which also includes DSL and cable technologies, set a new record of $11.5 billion last year. Dell’Oro Group senior analyst Alam Tamboli said PON spending had picked up in North American  last year with the advent of gigabit networks, but those deployments were small when compared to China.  

IBM, Juniper aim at CSP market with big data services

Comcast mulls ways to monetize Wi-Fi

Comcast executives Neil Smit and CEO Brian Roberts said on this morning’s fourth-quarter and year-end earnings call that Comcast was looking at ways to monetize Wi-Fi/wireless that could result in a launch over the coming months. Both Roberts and Smit declined to provide specifics on what the new Wi-Fi products or services would be.

Mediacom adds data subs, loses video customers

At year’s end 2014, Mediacom was down to 890,000 basic video customers. Its total number of broadband customers in 2013 was 965,000, but by the close of the most recent year, the company had increased its total broadband customer base to over a million.

Verizon report: IoT building momentum

According to recent report commissioned by Verizon, the Internet of Things (IoT) sector is being powered by technological, political and social factors that are driving more organizations to adopt IoT-enabled services and platforms. The use of social media and mobile technology—along with declining costs for IoT equipment, processing power and connectivity—were cited as factors for the current momentum behind IoT adoption.

Ergen back as Dish’s CEO: Clayton to retire

Dish Network co-founder and Chairman Charles Ergen is returning to the helm of the satellite TV provider as the company faces declining subscribers and a changing pay-TV industry. CEO Joseph Clayton, 64, said Monday he will retire March 31. He had been CEO since June 2011 and also holds the president title.

FairPoint back to work this week in northern New England

FairPoint Communications workers have a new contract, and they're ready to return to work this week. More than 1,700 workers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont report for duty Wednesday for the first time since going on strike four months ago. Officials announced Sunday that they'd ratified a new contract.

Level 3 vaults to 2nd place on Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard

Thanks to its acquisition of tw telecom last year, Level 3 has moved into second-place on Vertical System Group’s U.S. Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard. Based on retail port shares, Level 3 was behind top-ranked AT&T but ahead of third-place Verizon.
