GCI Communications, which is Alaska’s biggest telecommunications company, said it would have the state’s first Gigabit Internet service live in Anchorage by 2015. Before it reaches 1 Gig, GCI said it would incrementally increase the speeds on its "fiber re:D" tier.

Just in time for the holidays, Time Warner Cable has added support for Kindle tablets on its TWC TV app, and updated some features across Roku, Xbox and Samsung devices. The TWC TV app now works with Kindle Fire HD and HDX tablets for Time Warner Cable customers that subscribe to its “standard” or “preferred” video tiers.
The service trial will kick off by middle of 2014 and will be limited to Corpus Christi, Tex., initially. Today AT&T officially launched its U-Verse GigaPower service in Austin, which came out of the starter’s blocks with symmetrical 300 Mbps speeds before ramping up to 1 Gbps next year. Incoming Time Warner Cable Inc. CEO Rob Marcus said Monday that the company's current debt level is "prudent," even as other cable TV companies are reportedly examining adding debt to acquire it. Marcus, the chief operating officer who will replace Glenn Britt as chief executive on Jan. 1, told an investor conference in New York that the company's target of having debt that is 3.25 times its cash flow is appropriate.
This Technology today announced that its advertising solution has been deployed by Comcast Cable. The multi-year agreement covers a range of Comcast IP video platforms, enabling delivery of advertising for live and on-demand video viewing on a number of devices, including IP-enabled set top boxes, gaming consoles, connected TVs, smartphones and tablets.

Verizon is buying the content delivery company EdgeCast, boosting its video delivery and Internet services capabilities. Verizon said EdgeCast will become part of its digital media services business, increasing its ability to deliver content and site acceleration services to customers including studios, broadcasters and retailers.
Time Warner Cable announced this morning that Christian Lee had been promoted to senior vice president, mergers and acquisitions effective Dec. 31. Separately, Rob Marcus, who will take over the reins of the company on Jan. 1, said in a Bloomberg story that he was “the perfect guy to manage the M&A component out there.”
US Senator Kelly Ayotte has introduced legislation that would ensure that rural states get at least 75 cents for every dollar they contribute to the USF. The money is collected through telephone bills, but Ayotte says New Hampshire gets back only 37 cents for every dollar it sends.
In order to woo and maintain subscribers, Verizon has added 16 new streaming channels to its out-of-home roster, which now gives it a total of 25. Verizon FiOS subscribers that have the free FiOS Mobile App are now be able to live stream the new channels from eligible devices, including the iPad, iPhone, select Android tablets and phones, and Kindle Fire tablets, both in and outside the home.
The new mobile personal emergency response system (mPERS) uses AT&T’s wireless network for communications and location information. The device can automatically detect a fall and connect to a call center for two-way voice communication for immediate response and support.

Many wonder how today’s HFC networks will support high order modulations such as 4096-QAM. There are two technologies in the DOCSIS 3.1 specification that will enable this. One is Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) and the other low-density parity-check (LDPC) forward error correction. LDPC is the “C” (coded) part in COFDM.
