Miranda Technologies acquires Softel

Miranda Technologies said it has acquired Softel, a provider of captioning, subtitling, audio and video description, interactivity, and other video technologies. The value of the deal was not disclosed. Miranda was purchased by Belden last year.

DTS, RGB collaborate on quality audio

DTS and RGB Networks said they will integrate the former’s audio solutions into the latter’s multi-screen IP video delivery products. The result is a product that video distributors can use to control program and advertising sound levels in conformance with the CALM Act.

Time Warner Cable wins Dodgers TV deal

Time Warner Cable has won a contract to carry Los Angeles Dodgers games for at least the next two decades starting in 2014, snatching the games away from Fox Sports after this year's baseball season ends, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Consumers want to watch their videos anytime, anywhere and on any device, but content licensing issues are shackling those efforts, according to a recent study. Infonetics Research pinged pay-TV operators in regard to their multi-screen video services and delivering live and file-based content to subscribers across multiple devices.

Time Warner Cable is taking aim at winning back former customers through a new marketing campaign. The operator is targeting video customers that it has lost to the likes of Verizon and AT&T. The marketing campaign is called “The Better Guarantee” and is an extension of the cable operator’s “Enjoy Better” campaign.

Suddenlink promotes Stephens to division president

Suddenlink has promoted Kevin Stephens to president of the company’s Commercial & Advertising Operations (CAO) organization, headquartered in Dallas. Two other Suddenlink executives were promoted to vice president: Brian May and Bradley Cooke.

TWC cuts ribbon on new concept store in Wilmington, N.C.

The Wilmington store is the first of its kind, but Time Warner Cable plans on expanding the concept nationally over the next few years.

CES: Motorola provisions new media server for Verizon

Kilar to quit as CEO of Hulu by March

Broadcasters intro MyDTV multi-screen service

Fisher Communications and Hubbard Broadcasting announced what they are calling a soft consumer launch of a mobile digital television service, called MyDTV, in Seattle and Minneapolis, respectively. Both are initially distributing 750 receivers in each of their respective markets.

Motorola wins Emmy for ad insertion

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is giving Motorola Mobility an Emmy Award. The Academy is honoring Motorola’s use of its CherryPicker video processor for digital program insertion (DPI), specifically for serving localized ads across digital programming.

AT&T adds more Starz to TV Everywhere menu

AT&T has beefed up its TV Everywhere roster with the addition of  Starz Play, Encore Play and MoviePlex Play from Starz Entertainment. AT&T subscribers that are signed up for the Starz Encore and MoviePlex premium channels can now view the content on iOS devices through their Wi-Fi and broadband connections.

TV viewing could soon sound a little calmer. The CALM Act, which limits the volume of TV commercials, goes into effect. The act is designed to prevent TV commercials from blaring at louder volumes than the program content they accompany.

Time Warner Cable updates app to include VOD

With the update, Time Warner Cable is now serving up 4,000 VOD titles on iPad, iPhone and iPad touch devices to subscribers. The movies and shows come in both SD and HD formats from 91 providers. Users have access to the VOD programming associated with their subscription packages. Other cable operators, such as Cablevision, also offer subscribers access to their VOD libraries across multiple screens.

TVNZ sets on-demand catch-up TV app

New Zealand’s national broadcaster is preparing to launch an on-demand catch-up TV app for both Apple iOS and Google Android devices. TVNZ’s onDemand catch-up app will be built to use Brightcove’s App Cloud mobile app platform, allowing TVNZ to securely deliver content.
