Amdocs unveils Wi-Fi Experience Solution

Amdocs took the wraps off its Wi-Fi Experience Solution at the Policy Control and Data Pricing conference in Berlin.

Using Amdoc’s network control offerings, the Wi-Fi Experience Solution enables mobile and broadband service providers to accelerate their Wi-Fi service deployments. The platform features policy control and authentication capabilities for subscriber onboarding and service innovation, as well as a portal framework that integrates with the service provider’s existing customer service portal and payment systems for rapid service monetization. 

“Service providers are seeking ways to easily integrate Wi-Fi into their offerings, such as providing a shared data quota across multiple devices and networks,” said Rebecca Prudhomme, Amdocs vice president for product and solutions marketing.  “Unlike standalone Wi-Fi solutions, the Amdocs Wi-Fi Experience Solution offers a common data subscription management approach across 3G/4G/Fixed and Wi-Fi, and ties into existing payment systems for service monetization.  

“Our pre-integrated approach provides a time to market advantage over vendor-specific Wi-Fi solutions, and helps operators address today’s imperative of providing customers a range of Wi-Fi services, as part of a broader HetNet strategy.” 

Amdocs didn’t say if its new Wi-Fi offering was in any trials with cable operators or other service providers.

According to a global service provider survey on Wi-Fi deployment trends announced in January, service differentiation is now viewed as the top driver for Wi-Fi – ahead of Wi-Fi data offloading.  The survey, conducted for Amdocs by Analysys Mason, found that the majority of service providers cited service differentiation as the #1 driver for their Wi-Fi strategies. 

“We expect handset Wi-Fi usage to grow to more than 60 percent of overall mobile phone traffic in the next few years, while tablet Wi-Fi usage will remain constant at more than 80 percent of traffic,” said Chris Nicoll, principal analyst at Analysys Mason. “Service providers must capitalize on Wi-Fi’s popularity and are now attaching increased significance to Wi-Fi as a service differentiator, using it to deliver incremental value to their customers and to open the door to new monetization opportunities.”

Cable operators in the Untied States have jumped onto the Wi-Fi bandwagon with both feet. At last year’s Cable Show, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox Communications, Cablevision and Bright House Networks announced a roaming agreement that allowed their subscribers to use each other’s Wi-Fi hotspots.  To date, cable operators in the U.S. have deployed more than 100,000 hotspots, according to the NCTA.
