SeaChange's Nitro NowSeaChange International has extended the shelf life of older, QAM-based set-top boxes with the release of its Nitro Now software, which features high-resolution graphics and faster search and discovery capabilities in VOD guides.

According to a company spokesman, Nitro Now has moved past lab trials and is currently in commercial rollouts with several cable operators in the Americas. Nitro Now is an upgrade to SeaChange’s VODlink software, which the company said was the VOD guide of choice for more than 5 million set-top boxes.

Nitro Now was designed to bring Internet-like functionality, including branding and richer colors and graphics, to a wide range of Motorola and Cisco set-top boxes.

"Nitro Now is a pre-integrated, software-only solution that deploys rapidly to help our customers totally innovate the subscriber experience on their set-top boxes," said Anthony Landamia, executive director of product management at SeaChange. "The effect is a completely contemporary experience that doesn't require a single truck roll, even for homes that last received a new set-top during the 1990s."

Looking ahead, Nitro Now also was designed to integrate with cable operators’ future IP-based whole-home services developed on SeaChange's previously released Nitro multi-screen subscriber interface and Nucleus soft box gateway software.

Nitro Now also includes SeaChange's Watch & Buy t-commerce application, which allows operators to offer subscribers a secure environment for remote control point-of-purchase ordering of content and merchandise related to the movies and TV programs streamed to their set-top box. Options could include content locker downloads or Blu-ray DVDs, soundtracks and video games shipped directly to subscriber homes.

Nitro Now will be demoed later this moth in Boston at The Cable Show.
