REMOTE CONTROLS - Hillcrest Labs Debuts Freespace MotionEngine, Scoop

Hillcrest Labs has unveiled its second-generation family of user interface solutions that allow a wide range of products to incorporate natural user interfaces (NUIs).

The new Freespace MotionEngine provides a motion software stack that simplifies integration of inertial and magnetic sensors for a variety of uses.

Hillcrest Labs' Scoop PointerFor customers that want to incorporate a completely designed motion sensor solution, Hillcrest said it offers a family of new sensor modules. These physical devices come in a variety of configurations that include various combinations of MEMS motion sensors, motion processors and appropriate APIs.

Hillcrest also offers reference remote controls for those companies that have limited in-house design services, using the vendor’s industrial design, MEMS electronics and massscale manufacturing.

"Our new product portfolio gives our customers maximum flexibility to incorporate Freespace motion control into their products and accelerate their time to market," said Dan Simpkins, founder and CEO of Hillcrest Labs.

The key functions of the MotionEngine are sensor fusion, calibration, 3-D device motion, gestures and cursor control, which are implemented with sensors from a variety of MEMS suppliers. For remote controls and game controllers, the MotionEngine can run on the controller, on a USB dongle, or directly on a TV or STB SoC. Motion data processed by the MotionEngine is delivered using a standards-based API and is compatible with USB, Bluetooth, RF4CE and other RF protocols. The Freespace MotionEngine is the same software embedded in the new line of Roku 2 streaming media players and LG's Smart TVs.

The Scoop pointer is a second-generation in-air mouse with six-axis motion control, which interfaces wirelessly to any PC, Mac or USB HID-compatible device through a USB dongle. This new OEM product is a reference design and will replace the Loop pointer when it’s released in Q4.

PerfTech Tackles Complex Network Architecture Challenges

PerfTech has announced the Bulletin System MX product line and the Version 3.1 release of its Bulletin System software.

The major enhancements of Version 3.1 include a new power-safe file system, advanced capabilities to customize bulletin content and target bulletin recipients, and about triple the previous performance and capacity of its devices.

These new capabilities enabled the company to expand its current product offering and introduce Bulletin System MX, a line geared for networks of millions up to tens of millions of subscribers. The new release has been in trial or production use for up to six months by three top-tier PerfTech customers, the company said.

The Version 3.1 software takes advantage of a completely re-architected network stack. The Bulletin Director family now supports up to 2 million subscribers per stackable 1RU device, providing virtually any capacity with relatively few devices.

New Version 3.1 functionality applied to the Bulletin System’s integrated database allows ISPs to personalize in-browser bulletin content for more meaningful messaging, streamline policy creation and management, and enhance targeting selection by forming recipient groups dynamically based on variable criteria.

The Bulletin System MX line offers very large Internet providers a scalable approach to meet the most complex network architecture challenges.
