QoS - Cheetah debuts V-Factor 2.6 for its Source Monitor

Cheetah Technologies has released V-Factor 2.6 for its Source Monitor product family.

The V-Factor Source Monitor is a video performance monitoring solution within broadband communications and video network applications. The 2.6 release advances Cheetah’s capabilities to provide a meaningful and statistically relevant mean opinion score (MOS) grade for video streams.

Cheetah V-Factor 2.6 provides a complete solution that examines the network and packet, transport and video coding layers, as well as the digital video stream, to determine the quality and MOS grade. The new release bases this analysis on three metrics: blockiness, blurriness and jerkiness. In addition, V-Factor 2.6 adds colorfulness, audio loudness and other key metrics.

Cheetah Technologies is completing several trials with major service providers and is activating major video office installations in cable television, telecommunications, direct broadband satellite and video broadcast facilities.

“Our solutions are transformational in that we can create a ‘before and after’ analysis on ingest, post-encode and edge locations,” said Steve Day, vice president of marketing at Cheetah. “Degradation of video can occur at so many points in the network, and V-Factor’s ability to measure so many different metrics is the foundation of accurate diagnosis of root cause. We are excited about evolving video monitoring to a more intelligent outcome.”

The V-Factor product line includes the Source Monitor, a 24/7 video monitor with detailed video metric analysis. It is capable of monitoring hundreds of ingest and post-encode locations from a central management system. Cheetah’s Stream Probe Advanced, Edge and QAM are virtual probes that can monitor the network and packet, transport and video coding layers, as well as digital video streams, for thousands of deep network and edge locations. And the Virtual Stream Probes from Cheetah are alternatives to hardware-based, fixed function probes, and they can be reconfigured and can live almost anywhere a server is located.

Zarlink releases timing products for LTE

Zarlink Semiconductor has introduced new single-chip timing products – its ZL30342, ZL30343 and ZL30347 IEEE 1588-enabled SyncE devices – that are capable of delivering the complete synchronization solution required by new wireless technologies such as LTE.

Zarlink Single-Chip Timing Products“Our new timing products are the industry's first single-chip IEEE 1588-enabled SyncE PLL devices,” said Louise Gaulin, vice president of Zarlink's Timing and Synchronization product group. “Our complete approach provides carriers with well-established synchronization from SyncE, together with time alignment provided by IEEE 1588. This approach is critically important for wireless operators as they plan a cost-effective migration to packet-based backhaul to support the huge increase in multimedia traffic generated by smartphones and tablets.”

Zarlink's packet timing products are designed into wireless base stations, radio network controllers, DSLAM, PON, aggregation and transmission equipment, and routers to ensure network synchronization for multimedia applications now being delivered over packet networks.

Wireless network operators can use both SyncE and IEEE 1588 technologies simultaneously to meet performance requirements in 3G and 4G networks. In these applications, SyncE delivers accurate and stable frequency references using the physical Ethernet connections. In combination with this, IEEE 1588 distributes time of day and time alignment functionality.

Qualcomm Atheros' QCA8829Qualcomm Atheros debuts chip for FTTH

Qualcomm Atheros, the networking and connectivity subsidiary of Qualcomm, has launched the QCA8829, an integrated, ultra-low-power 1G Ethernet passive optical networking chip solution that enables next-generation optical broadband access to homes and businesses.

 The QCA8829 chip helps to advance the development of FTTH by supporting multiple standards, including those supporting cable operators’ optical broadband in North America, provisioning for Smart Grid applications over PON in China and EPON infrastructures in markets worldwide.

Standards supported by the chip solution include the DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE) 1.0 specification, the IEEE 802.3ah EPON spec, the China State Grid EPON spec and the China Telecom (CTC) EPON spec. The chip solution is specifically tailored to meet the evolving needs of telecom carriers, cable operators and utility providers.

Samples of the QCA8829 and reference design kits are available; volume shipments will be available in Q4 2011.
