SCTE's SEMI considers disaster preparedness
The SCTE's Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI) has decided to expand its charter beyond energy management to include emergency preparedness and disaster recovery planning for communications networks.
"World events have demonstrated clearly this year the impact that natural and man-made events can have on the critical infrastructures that are needed for day-to-day services," said Mark Dzuban, president and CEO of SCTE. "As cable's service portfolio has grown to include data, voice and now mobile services, it has become more important than ever for operators to have the resources in place to ensure both service continuity and revenue continuity when incidents occur."
SEMI said it will identify needs for such disasters as earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes and tornadoes, as well as man-made events such as terror attacks and blackouts. In each case, benchmarks and strategies will be defined for preventing service interruption, rapid restoration of service, and ensuring the availability and safety of the workforce in adverse conditions.
Separately, the SCTE issued a reminder that its deadline for abstracts for technical sessions at the next Cable-Tec Expo is June 10. The SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2011 Program Committee is seeking abstracts addressing all areas of cable telecommunications technology, but it has a set of suggested topics on its website .
Chaired by Suddenlink CTO Terry Cordova, the Program Committee is particularly interested in proposals that address today's technical and engineering issues and opportunities from a here-and-now perspective. Abstracts must be tailored for workshop learning and provide real-world tools that attendees can apply to their everyday work.
The SCTE also announced that Pat Esser, president of Cox Communications, will deliver an opening address at Cable-Tec Expo.
"Cable's ability to deliver the products and services consumers demand with the quality they expect will be essential to the future success of our industry," said Esser. "SCTE Cable-Tec Expo plays an important role in advancing the education and skills our executives, managers and field engineers require to meet and exceed our customers' needs today and in the future."
