• Craig Wireless, Moto deploy WiMAX in Vancouver
By Andrew Berg, Wireless Week
Not only did Vancouver land this year's Winter Olympics, the city also got a WiMAX network. Craig Wireless, in cooperation with Motorola, today announced deployment of a new 802.16e WiMAX network in Vancouver, British Columbia. The system marks the first commercial deployment of Motorola's mobile WiMAX technology in Canada.
The project was announced in September of 2009. Under the agreement, Motorola provided its end-to-end WiMAX solution, including base stations, wireless access controllers, and an operation and maintenance center (OMC). Motorola also provided supporting services for network design, planning, installation and optimization for end-to-end integration of the network, which will operate in the 2.5 GHz spectrum band.
"The Motorola solution will enable us to hit the ground running in our Vancouver market and seize immediate opportunities to serve our customers with new mobile services and applications," said Rod Vandenbos, president of Craig Wireless Systems. "Our customers in Vancouver will be able to enjoy fast, reliable connections to the Internet anywhere they live, work or play."
Motorola's WiMAX solution is designed to enable rapid implementation of VoIP and broadband services such as high-speed Internet, video streaming and VPN access in fixed, nomadic and mobile environments.
