Want a Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modem with those Fry’s?
Motorola is serving up a DOCSIS 3.0 modem at Fry’s Electronics, which it said marks the first time that a 3.0 modem is available in a retail environment.
Motorola has an agreement in place with Fry’s for its Surfboard SB6120 modem, which was certified for DOCSIS 3.0 last year by CableLabs.
Off-the-shelf DOCSIS 3.0 modems allow cable subscribers to own their modems instead of leasing them from cable operators, and they are backwards compatible with DOCSIS 2.0. While large cable operators such as Comcast, Cablevision, Charter and Cox are rolling out the faster data speeds that are a feature set of DOCSIS 3.0, consumers may buy the modems now in order to “future proof” their homes for when DOCSIS 3.0 is deployed in their areas.
“We’re witnessing the greatest advancement in DOCSIS cable modems in more than 10 years, and Fry’s Electronics is at the forefront of the retail DOCSIS 3.0 movement,” said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager for Motorola Broadband Home Gateways & Software. “We are pleased to work with Fry’s Electronics and to provide consumers with high-end modems that will work with any form of DOCSIS network their cable operators provide.”
The 3.0 modems work in concert with Motorola’s NBBS Device Management Software Platform and its eCare offering for remote customer configuration, which may save some of the cable operators from truck rolls to customers’ homes during self-installations.
Motorola today announced that another of its WiMAX access points, the WAP 400 for 3.5GHz, was certified by the WiMAX Forum. The WAP 400 is the latest addition to Motorola’s portfolio of WiMAX Forum-certified gear that includes four 2.5GHz products.
WiMAX Forum certification is granted after compliant products pass required interoperability and conformance tests as outlined by the WiMAX Forum.
Motorola’s WAP 400 access point series is part of its WiMAX Flexible Access Point infrastructure portfolio, which Motorola said was widely deployed in 3.5GHz, 2.5GHz and 2.3GHz bands with customers around the world.
