Tekelec intros next-gen Eagle platform
Tekelec has unveiled the Eagle XG, a new signaling and session control platform that enables cable operators and telcos to deploy hybrid, next-generation networks (NGNs) while utilizing their existing technology investments.
The Eagle XG open hardware platform and applications are a step up from Tekelec’s Eagle 5 and give service providers a scalable migration to IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) or Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks.
The Morrisville, N.C.-based company said that its platform can lower capex and opex by consolidating subscriber and network routing data and eliminating the need to manage, maintain and update databases for each application. The platform can also deliver new services and improve network performance for operators.
“Service providers must meet customers’ needs for new services while watching the bottom line, especially in today’s economy," said Ron de Lange, executive vice president at Tekelec. “The Eagle XG is a natural evolution of Tekelec’s signaling technology that lets operators manage hybrid networks and expand next-generation networks, while consolidating and simplifying network architecture.”
The Eagle XG SIP Signaling Router (SSR) serves as an SIP proxy – bridging SIP- and SS7-based architectures to gain access to all routing information – and introduces SIP routing directly into the core network. The system creates a centralized session framework that increases service and network flexibility and initiates support for VoIP and multimedia services.
With a software upgrade, the SSR also serves as a Call Session Control Function (CSCF) to provide SIP signaling and session control for subscribers accessing IMS services. Tekelec said that the application, built to 3GPP standards, enables operators to deliver next-generation, multimedia services to any device.
Tekelec’s Service Broker blends intelligent network (IN) and next-generation services by providing interaction between SS7 and SIP-based platforms, resulting in increased average revenue per user (ARPU) and lower opex, while maintaining service continuity across hybrid networks.
The Eagle XG platform also includes a Home Location Register (HLR) Router, which is supported by the Eagle XG converged database and optimizes the use of subscriber numbers and number ranges by mapping subscriber numbers to an HLR.
The HLR router has been selected by an unnamed Tier 1 operator, and the SSR is in multiple Tier 1 operator trials. The Eagle XG applications can be purchased separately or together.
