Report: Europe seeing strongest broadband growth
The strongest engine for worldwide growth in broadband connectivity recently has been the European market, which now has more than 120 million subscribers, or 32 percent of the world’s total.
Worldwide, the number of broadband subscribers has now surpassed 380 million, according to a report prepared for the Broadband Forum by Point Topic. The new total reflects an increase of 17 percent in the past 12 months.
The top 10 countries, ranked by total broadband subscribers, is once again led by the U.S., which has nearly 77 million broadband subscribers.
This will almost certainly be the last year the U.S., the third-most populous country, will hold that distinction. China, first in population, now has just over 76 million subscribers, and its market is growing at a faster rate.
Worldwide, cable’s market share is 21.5 percent. Phone companies are succeeding with FTTx, but DSL still has 250 million subscribers and remains the most popular access technology with 64 percent of the market.
Within the DSL market, the deployment of ADSL2+ increased by 62.5 percent. Closely tied to IPTV deployment, service providers are upgrading existing ADSL to ADSL2+ networks.
