IBC: Harmonic makes inroads in Europe
AMSTERDAM – Harmonic Inc. celebrated two more orders from European service providers – Kabel Deutschland and Portugal Telecom – here at IBC 2008.
Kabel Deutschland (KDG) in Germany selected a suite of Harmonic encoding, re-encoding, multiplexing, scrambling, and network management systems for its new IP-enabled headend in Frankfurt. The Frankfurt headend will distribute video, voice and data traffic to regional headends.
KDG is installing DiviCom Electra 5000 standard-definition (SD) encoders, the ProStream 1000 stream processing platform with Mentor re-encoding technology, DiviTrackIP distributed statistical multiplexing, DVB scrambling and Forward Error Correction capability.
The equipment will enable KDG to intelligently manage content delivery across its MPEG-2 network; Harmonic said the installation will lead to immediate bandwidth and operational efficiencies.
Portugal Telecom, meanwhile, is using several of Harmonic’s IP-based MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) compression and stream processing solutions for its nationwide launch of satellite DTH television.
PT has bought DiviCom Electra 7000 HD H.264 encoders, Electra 5400 SD encoders and the ProStream1000 stream processing platform with DiviTrackIP. The video service is managed by Harmonic’s NMX Digital Service Manager.
The new service is offered as part of Portugal Telecom’s triple-play Meo package and complements its IPTV offering, which is also powered by Harmonic.
