SureWest ups data, video subs in Q2
SureWest Communications  lost some telephony and wireless subscribers but gained more voice and data subs in its second quarter, ended June 30.
Video subs increased 19 percent year-on-year - to 21,118 - and 3 percent sequentially. As of the end of Q2, SureWest offered its video customers 310 IPTV channels, including 23 HD channels.
Data RGUs increased 17 percent compared with the year-ago quarter - to 59,792 - and 3 percent sequentially.
“We are expanding the network in areas that offer the greatest potential for a triple play, and focusing the sales efforts on achieving the greatest penetration in the areas we serve,” said Steve Oldham, SureWest's president and CEO. “We believe the strong growth in data and video RGUs, and the fact that over 37 percent of SureWest data customers are taking 10 mbps or higher data speeds, supports our belief that consumers will continue to demand greater bandwidth and the corresponding network performance that bandwidth provides.”
Telcom access lines decreased 5 percent compared with the year-ago quarter - to 120,969 - and 3 percent compared with the previous quarter. But business access lines increased 10 percent year-on-year - to 2,574 - and 1 percent sequentially. VoIP service begun in the quarter but has yet to greatly impact revenue.
Wireless subscribers declined 3 percent compared with the year-ago quarter - to 51,568 - and 1 percent compared with the previous quarter.
Consolidated income from continuing operations increased by $1.7 million, “due primarily to increased broadband revenues and interest income resulting from the proceeds of the sale of SureWest Directories,” the company said.
