Telecommunications Winbeam Inc., a broadband wireless Internet service provider (ISP) based in Pennsylvania, has been acquired by Clearwire Corporation, a high-speed, wireless ISP based in Kirkland, Washington.
Winbeam will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Clearwire, beginning immediately. The company will continue to operate and provide existing services in all of its current markets. Established in 2000, Winbeam provides wireless broadband services primarily using licensed spectrum in the 2.5 GHz frequency band. Winbeam's 2.5 GHz spectrum holdings cover portions of Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
Winbeam also provides dial-up Internet service across most of western Pennsylvania. Clearwire offers its plug-and-play, portable, high-speed wireless Internet service in more than 200 cities and towns across the U.S. and Europe. Clearwire is utilising next-generation, non-line-of-site wireless technology developed by its wholly-owned subsidiary, NextNet Wireless.
