Level 3 adds E-911 capabilities
Level 3 Communications said a subsidiary is now capable of providing E-911 using VoIP technology.
Level 3, which has been deploying the capability in more than 300 markets, said its E-911 footprint currently covers about 60 million U.S. households.
E-911, shorthand for Enhanced 911, delivers address-specific information to public safety agencies whenever a 911 call is made. It enables first responder to be dispatched to a scene of an emergency even if the caller is unable to speak or is suddenly disconnected.
"It is increasingly important that VoIP service providers be able to deliver E-911 in order to meet the demands of the market, as well as fulfill important public-safety needs," said Sureel Chosksi, Level 3's EVP of services.
