Shaw offers VOD, HD in Edmonton

Canadian MSO Shaw Cablesystems has launched video-on-demand and high-definition television services to customers in Edmonton.

Shaw's VOD service, which requires customers to be both digital video and high-speed data customers, is also offered in its Calgary, Vancouver, Saskatoon and Fort McMurray systems. nCUBE Corp. is the MSO's VOD technology partner in those markets. Instead of using a set-top-based interface, Shaw leverages a secure Internet-based ordering platform for VOD titles.

Shaw's HD launch in Edmonton is the operator's first for the service. Using Motorola Broadband 's DCT-5100 HD set-top, Shaw is providing HDTV programming from local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates.
