Comcast rolls out mobile HD facility
Comcast SportsNet has rolled out a 53-foot long HDTV mobile production facility that will cover local sporting events in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC.
The facility, built by Sony Electronics' Integration Center in San Jose, will aid Comcast SportsNet in the production this year of 200 live games in all their high-definition glory. The facility will provide HD coverage for a number of games played by Philadelphia's Flyers, 76ers and Phillies, Washington's Capitals and Wizards, the Baltimore Orioles, and "select" postseason games.
Following some initial training sessions in the nation's capital, the unit will head to Philadelphia to cover Comcast SportsNet's first HD game on Feb. 15, when the NHL Flyers face the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.
As for its technical makeup, the production facility houses 200 video monitors, including three 42-inch plasma displays, and 10 hand-held studio and robotic HD cameras that will allow for the simultaneous transmission of games in standard definition and high-definition.
