Terayon improves its BE 2000

Karen Kessler-Tanaka

It sounds like a car, but it's not. Terayon 's second-generation version of the BE 2000 System is helping cable operators with their network security. The BE 2000 System is a CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) which controls subscribers' cable modems with a high-performance IP switch/router.

The technology has new features including one that prevents hackers from camouflaging themselves as a cable operator's dynamic host control protocol server, the all important component which configures subscribers' cable modems.

Another new capability of the system prevents hackers from stealing a cable modem's IP address, which could be used to intercept information meant for the cable modem user.

Other second-generation features include the ability to monitor and account for subscriber traffic so cable operators can offer and guarantee service level agreements. And hardware-based routing has replaced software-based architectures to increase and maintain system performance as the number of subscribers increases.

The BE 2000 System is DOCSIS 1.0 certified and has also been re-qualified to meet the EuroDOCSIS standard by tComLabs, a laboratory commissioned by the EuroDOCSIS Certification Board. This means that the system is interoperable with other EuroDOCSIS products.
