PipeRider gets a lift

Bring it home, take it out of the box and plug it in. Ericsson and SofaWare are safeguarding Internet connections with what the companies hope is a new ease.

Ericsson will integrate SofaWare's Safe@Home [1] consumer firewall security software into its PipeRider HM204c/HM205c cable modems. SofaWare's Safe@Home [1] is based on Check Point Software's Internet security technology, FireWall-1, which has been licensed in over 186,000 business installations worldwide. The modems and the firewall software are targeted at SOHO users.

According to SofaWare, Safe@Home [1] is the first technology to safeguard multiple PCs, laptops and other Internet-based devices in a residence. Unlike PC-based firewalls that only protect one computer, SofaWare's Safe@Home [1] is the first comprehensive security solution designed to protect Internet devices within the home. This unique residential gateway approach allows protection for multiple PCs and laptops and other Internet-based multimedia devices.

"This solution now enables consumers to protect their data from hackers and prying eyes," said Sheila Aharoni, Vice President of Business Development for SofaWare.

The Ericsson PipeRider cable modem arrives with Safe@Home [1] installed and conforms to the DOCSIS and EuroDOCSIS interoperability standards. There are upgrades to more comprehensive security and access management solutions, including a version managed remotely by a service provider.
