Cox buying a whole lot of set-tops

Karen Kessler-Tanaka

Cox is making a volume purchase of Scientific-Atlanta Explorer advanced set-tops. The number two MSO plans to purchase at least 240,000 of S-A's Explorer 2100 digital interactive set-tops in 2001.

The digital box offers enhanced features the company thinks is sure to whet subscribers' appetite for interactive TV applications. The Explorer 2100 set-top features applications and graphics performance with a 130 MHz processor and a cache memory that lets cable operators deploy multiple applications including e-mail, Internet access, t-commerce and video-on-demand.

Cox plans to distribute the set-tops to its subscribers nationwide, including its systems in Phoenix, Ariz., San Diego, Calif. and Pensacola, Fla. According to Cox, the company has already deployed more than half a million Explorer digital set-tops in its major systems.
