The cable industry is moving toward all-IP networking but has a ways yet to go. But other companies are already there. Even though some of those all-IP providers are telcos, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t lessons that might be learned from their experiences. Robert Winters, CMO of Shenick Network Systems, suggests that cable companies can avoid repeating some of the mistakes made by others by studying those errors and their solutions.
Winters writes: “Telcos went from having voice nailed down to adding video and data, but video presents a different set of challenges such as delay, packet loss and black screen cut-out. Many cable MSOs are now in the process of delivering video over IP as a solution, but it presents many challenges.
