Comcast accelerates Xfinity for Californians

The MSOs latest speed increase applies to all California customers except those in Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Isleton, Lodi and Rio Vista. The other markets where Comcast accelerated Xfinity speeds are Olathe, KS, Independence, MO, and Houston, TX.

CableLabs to help Averna with DOCSIS 3.1 analyzer

Averna is developing a new version of its DOCSIS 3.1 Protocol Analyzer Early, and has conscripted CableLabs to join its early adopter program to help the company develop the product. The analyzer is used for functional DOCSIS and EuroDOCSIS network analysis, providing visibility into all layers of the network.

Comcast renews Internet Essentials commitment

The MSO is offering up to 6 months of complimentary service for any family that has not yet applied for Internet Essentials. Comcast also said it intends to forgive the debt of some families that have subscribed in the past to the Internet Essentials program and still have unpaid balances.

French Carrier Iliad Offers to Buy T-Mobile

Small French carrier Iliad  is offering $15 billion for a 56.6 percent stake in T-Mobile. Iliad owner Xavier Niel said the deal represents a 42-percent premium over T-Mobile's stock price at the time of the announcement. Iliad confirmed the deal already has backing from international banks.

RGB networks realigns, with new focus on software

The company will deemphasize hardware development in favor of software products. RGB execs declined to comment on reports of a layoff of nearly one-third of its employees, other than to say that any reduction in workforce will not impact the company’s strategy.

C7 Data Centers serves up Comcast Business services at new data center

C7 Data Centers is offering Comcast Business Ethernet services as a connectivity option for customers at C7’s new colocation data center. The new Granite Point II colocation data center is located in Bluffdale, Utah, which is one of four data centers in the metro Salt Lake City area that are connected to Comcast’s network.

Comcast re-ups with CSG

Comcast has signed a new contract with CSG International that provides the cable operator with CSG’s residential billing services through June 30, 2019. While CSG has worked with Comcast for the past 20 years, the new contract provides the framework for Comcast to consolidate all of its residential business onto CSG’s billing platform.

Report: Ethernet switch market to close in on $25 billion by 2018

According to a recent report, the Layer 2-3 Ethernet Switch market is projected to approach $25 billon by 2018. The report by Dell’Oro Group said a 10 Gigabit Ethernet peak is anticipated before 2018 and then 100 Gigabit Ethernet was expected to become mainstream.

U.S. law enforcement can force Microsoft Corp. to turn over emails it stores in Ireland, a judge ruled in a case that technology companies have rallied around as they pursue billions of dollars in data storage business abroad. U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska ruled from the bench Thursday after hearing oral arguments in Manhattan.

New video products pump up Charter's Q2

The MSO lost almost half as many video subscribers in its second quarter of 2014 as it did in Q2 2013. Charter has about 60 percent of its footprint converted to all-digital, and is introducing its new Charter Spectrum triple play with more HD channels and a new cloud-based interface it is beginning test.

Austin next for TWC Maxx upgrade; 7 cities on tap next year

Time Warner Cable CEO Rob Marcus outlined several of the company’s top priorities during this morning’s second quarter earnings call, which included the announcement that seven cities are slated to receive TWC Maxx network upgrades next year. TWC Maxx, which features 300 Mbps on the downstream, will touch down in Charlotte, Dallas, Hawaii, Kansas City, Raleigh, San Antonio and San Diego.

BHN launches Echo to fill in Wi-Fi deadspots

Bright House Networks is now offering residential subscribers in its Central Florida and Tampa Bay areas a new service that was designed to eliminate Wi-Fi “dead zones” in homes. The service, which is called “Echo,” is able to expand Wi-Fi into areas of a home that previously had trouble receiving the signals.

DirecTV 2Q profit climbs 22 percent

DirecTV on Thursday reported profit that rose by 22 percent in its second quarter, helped by demand for World Cup soccer game coverage, and topped analysts' expectations. The El Segundo, California-based company said earnings increased to $806 million, or $1.59 per share, from $660 million, or $1.18 per share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

Verizon Digital Media Services and thePlatform have combined the former’s suite of video services and the latter’s mpx video-management system to form a system they say performs everything from content management to multi-screen delivery.
