Time Warner Cable drops new Arris gateway into LA, New York City markets

Time Warner Cable has upped its DVR capability in its Los Angeles and New York City markets with a new six-tuner gateway from Arris. Arris’ DCX3600 gateway features a 1-terabyte hard drive, which features up to six times more storage capacity than current Time Warner Cable DVRs.

Eastlink launches Wireless TV

Canadian cable operator Eastlink recently launched “Wireless TV” across its footprint, which gives its subscribers the ability to watch TV on up to six sets in a home without cable connections.The service uses Eastlink’s Maestro DVR, which, according to pictures on Eastlink’s website, is made by Arris.

Cox doubles up on San Diego broadband speeds

Cox Communications is doubling up the downstream speeds on two of its most popular tiers in San Diego County. The speed of Cox’s Preferred tier will increase from 25 Mbps down to 50 Mbps while the Premier offering ramps up from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps. Cox said the Preferred and Premier tiers represent more than 75 percent of its data customers in San Diego.

FTC names privacy expert as chief technologist

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday named an outspoken Internet privacy expert, Ashkan Soltani, as its chief technologist in a move that signals the agency's focus on protecting consumers' online privacy. A computer scientist and technology researcher, Soltani has advised several leading news organizations in reporting on complex technical issues related to Internet privacy.

Smaller carriers like Guam-based Docomo and Bluegrass Wireless have thrown their hats in the ring, but the ones to watch are AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Dish, which needs a strong broadband play and thinks wireless will be the way to go.

Turner channels removed from Dish amid pact spat

Channels such as Cartoon Network and CNN are no longer part of Dish's programming lineup as a deadline has passed for the satellite TV provider and Turner Broadcasting to renew their distribution agreement. Dish Network Corp. said Tuesday that Turner refused to extend the overall deal. But Turner— a division of Time Warner Inc. — said in a statement that it has worked for months to come up with a fair agreement.

Rentrak scores STB status measurement patent

Rentrak announced this morning that it has been granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the method and system behind measuring the status of set-top boxes. U.S. Patent number 8,863,166 was designed to identify when TV sets are off, but the set-top-box is on.

Google's 3Q earnings fall as expenses climb 30%

Google's third-quarter earnings slipped as the Internet search leader hired nearly 3,000 more employees while pouring more money into its zest for innovation and quest for new markets. The results announced Thursday fell below analyst estimates, causing Google's stock to drop by $12.92, or 2.4 percent, to $524 in extended trading.
